The popular contention is that the Bush administration planned the Iraq War, not in response to 9/11 but in spite of it (as part of a to-do list for their time in office); that they used their allies (specifically the UK) to seek legitimacy for it in the United Nations, and that they planned to use the intelligence services as a scapegoat.

Congress dropped the ball, and didn't hold the president to account and sufficient scrutiny. I don't deny that.

Big picture - there's a difference between being incompetent and being a crook.

Appeasement gets one nowhere. Only self destructive idiots think otherwise.

It's funny but when I heard the speech I thought he was talking about Carter. Since he mentioned no one by name and Obama immediately chimed in as an injured party my guess is he saw himself in that group on his own. Tells me that he is indeed in the appeasement group by his own admission.

True but a lot of people have been killed because the diplomacy failed when strong preventive measures could have prevented a larger war. Diplomacy depends on both parties acting in a responsible manner. The people that Obama wants to have a dialog with are not responsible and can be counted on to say one thing and do another. Some people can't be reasoned with.
