While I don't believe that Marc's drivel warranted any response at all, what you say here sums it up quite well. I agree that Germany as a nations and most Germans as individuals take very seriously the damage that was done by their country in the 1930's and 40's. For anyone to suggest that I am somehow personally responsible for what happened prior to not only me but also prior to my parents being born is utterly ridiculous. In that sense, it fits the person that made the suggestion quite well.

But... there's no shortage of humanitarian effort on either issue, regardless of whether or not individuals choose to ignore them.

Israel of course makes the news more frequently because of the close connection between that country and the United States.

In any case - its well established that the deaths of 50 Americans or Europeans in a bus crash in the far east makes a bigger headline than the deaths of 30,000 3rd world nationals.

Noone focuses on that of course...

Your right I shouldnt have personalised it the way I did. For that I apologise. I was trying to draw the comparison of all this talk about how bad african americans have it here and in the past.

Getting into this guilt bs about the past is total #######. We all need to move on and quit singling certain races and creeds out and making them feel bad about the past.

Getting into this guilt bs about the past is total #######. We all need to move on and quit singling certain races and creeds out and making them feel bad about the past.

I think the answer to that is that the descendants of most ordinary criminals aren't still benefitting from their crimes. While we continue to benefit we are also liable, in my view, to a degree of reparation or restitution. Thus the white society which benefitted from slavery is indeed responsible to help those who are still suffering from the results of slavery.

As I mentioned this is previously in regards to Germany the fact remains that the German people are still collectively paying reparations or otherwise making restitution to Jewish people.

Obviously we don't need to beat our breasts about what our ancestors did, because, obviously , we are not them. The measure has to be whether we are still in some way benefitting from a collective crime against a group. I think much of the wealth which allowed Britain and America, in particular, to get the edge they maintained as super-wealthy societies during the last 200 years of economic growth, was based on slavery and, of course, colonialism.

That was surely the principle on which the Attlee government set aside such a huge part of the national budget towards helping India to independence. I think the British in the end did help India's transition to a modern democracy, but obviously I don't know whether Indians would agree that this happened because of British involvement or in spite of it.

See, I don't believe that. Germany didn't have any colonies, wasn't built on the backs

Right - but they also have their own share of social and economic problems resulting from the reunification of the old, impoverished East German state. In that respect I don't think its wrong to suggest that Germany faces a similar debate with regards to class and opportunity as we've been talking about in relation to race in America.
