Answering this question as asked will always be tricky. I mean, we didn't use a lawyer and sailed through without incident (Vermont and London). Would it have been easier or quicker if we had used a lawyer? Maybe, I don't know. Most of us don't have a reference point - we did it one way or the other, and so can't really compare.

The initial mystery that attends any journey is: how did the traveller reach his starting point in the first place?

Perhaps it might work if the question was specific - whether or not a lawyer was paid to actually file the relevant paperwork ... The data revealed might be of interest, particularly for those still in the pre-filing research stage.

We used a l-l-l-l-lawyer ( I still have a hard time saying that word) and it was the worst mistake ever! He sent it to the wrong service center and caused 2 RFE's. All that for $2,000.00. We were apart for 2 years while he learned about immigration. I should have directed him to VJ to learn what to do..lol.

He wanted an additional $1,500 to file AOS/EAD after Mohammed got here. We parted ways at this point and did it ourselves.

12-06-05: NOA1

03-02-06: NOA2

03-23-06: Interview Date May 16

05-17-06: K-1 Visa Issued

05-20-06: Arrived at POE, Honolulu

07-17-06: Married

AOS Timeline

08-14-06: Mailed I-485 to Chicago

08-24-06: NOA for I-485

09-08-06: Biometrics Appointment

09-25-06: I-485 transferred to CSC

09-28-06: I-485 received at CSC

10-18-06: AOS Approved

A lawyer won't help speed up the process, though a competent immigration lawyer will make sure everything is submitted properly and that should prevent an RFE.

I didn't get a lawyer and though we had an RFE it was fixed and approved three weeks later.

If you're reasonably intelligent you can figure it out yourself and save a lot of money. Otherwise, make sure you get an immigration lawyer or one who has done it before.

I used a laywer for the paperwork and all was fine, no RFEs. But the laywer told me I did not need biometrics for an EAD (??).

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

12-24-2005 Received interview letter; interview scheduled 03-01-2006

01-28-2006 Received replacement SSN card in married name (5 wks since application)

03-01-2006 AOS interview -- approved; received stamp in the passport

03-13-2006 Green card arrived in the mail

There was not much she could have done anyway! But I did get more advice and encouragement on VJ for sure.
