Scared out of my mind - going to oral surgeon in less than 2 hrs

I have an appointment with an oral surgeon at 1:00 to remove a tooth(molar) which was previously treated with root canal 12 years ago - it decayed under the crown so badly that there is really no tooth left above the gum save for a tiny bit which I can feel with my tongue. I have no idea what to expect - I have never even had any extractions or major dental work save for that one root canal... I am opting for local anesthetic because my insurance does not cover IV sedation...

Has anyone else had this kind of procedure? Please tell me what to expect - I imagine he will have to cut into my gum and that it will hurt for a while... :crying: I just wanted to get it done now so I wont worry about it while I am with hubster...

I had one wisdom tooth pulled out with local anesthetic and my surgeon was very nice and gentle. It all depends on who's doing the procedure but with the anesthetic you won't feel a thing. It might hurt later on but nothing a few pain killers won't take care of.

Good luck!

i had a root canal that later broke, they had to cut the gum to get to the tooth's root to extract it. local is what i had, you'll do fine.

This sounds like what I will have done - about how long did it take? At least I imagine there is no drilling involved...

I had a wisdom tooth taken out with local anesthetic as well. THey ven had to stitch the wound but I didn't feel a thing and the whole procedure took only 10 mins.

THey gave me painkillers for later and told me to not run around that day, stay out of the sun and put ice on it to prevent swelling.

It really wasn't that bad of a deal and I hope, it will be fine for you too.

Don't be too scared!!!

There are some complications that can occur like the tooth breaking even more during extraction. For the most part, it's usually so simple, you are going to wonder what all the fuss was about. I've had a total of 5 teeth extracted, 3 were wisdom, and 2 were root canals gone crazy......I had no issues with any of them. There were simple and recovery was minimal and painless.

Hubby had 2 teeth extracted last year on his very first encounters with a dentist during his life time.....He's still cussing. However, even his recovery was fairly uncomplicated.

You will be fine.

no drilling, took about 30 min after they figured out the tooth was broken. it broke from back to front and didn't show up on x-ray, so they did exploratory surgery to find out what was going on and as soon as they cut the gum open, the top of the tooth fell out. they then went on to removing the root. this was a front tooth, btw, so it was fairly easy to break off. as yours is a molar, they may have a bit more difficulty with it. when i had my wisdom teeth taken out, 2 of the 4 had to be cut into 4 sections to be removed.

Thanks Jomo, nane, and everyone - I feel much better now...

My hubby went to the dentist for the first time when he had a toothache last summer - I was there with him when the tooth was pulled - the whole procedure from novocaine to pulling took maybe 10 minutes - Govi didn't make a sound. You would think the dental care is horrible in Nepal but I was impressed with this dentist, the office was very professional, although yes they do not do much if any restorative work like root canals, they tend to just pull teeth - I guess they do it so often they are good at it.

Thanks for the laugh :star: - or the Nazi dentist from The Marathon Man... :o

I have heard that is painful (dry socket) - what causes it?

Did they use the "string and door" tooth-pulling method?

(Open the door, tie one end of the string to the tooth, the other end to the door knob, then slam the door shut.)
