No..

You only need the fingerprint based check if you have a criminal record. If you don't have a criminal record, you can go to your local RCMP post and request a name based check. You can also go to your local police service, but be sure that you request that it be based on a CPIC Canada Wide Search and that it states as such on the Police certificate.

Hm. I ordered my police certificate today in Toronto at Younge and College. I sure hope that it will be a Canada-wide search (as I forgot to tell them). :hehe:

Does anyone know if it will be a Canada wide search or will I have to go back and pay the fee again etc.?

Thanks!

Usually, they say that on the certificate. Something like:

"This certifies that a search, based on the above name and date of birth, failed to disclose any such person with a record of criminal convictions in the national repository for criminal records in Canada."

I guess the magic words are "national repository".

Majority of people (outside Toronto) Have gotten RCMP check. I belive on my CR-1 packet it stated RCMP. Others gave used ones from Various City Police Forces and the immigration people were happy. Many of the Police Forces use the same systemas the RCMP to conduct the background check. One has to ensure it is CANADA WIDE. Personally to avoid any confusion I would use the RCMP check--or if in the Greater Toronto Area, the Commisionaires. but thats only me!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

aye, me as well. The documents in my Packet 3 specifically stated to use the RCMP/Commissionaires, so that's what I went with. Others have used the police check, but they are few. Up to you, I guess!

Thanks, flames9 and Cassie. Where in the GTA can one go for the RCMP name check? Wasn't there an HQ somewhere around Jarvis in the downtown area?

Lola, what exactly did they ask for in your Pakage 3?

I downloaded RCMP form 3584e, Consent for Disclosure of Criminal Record Information. If this is the form used by the RCMP and Commissionaires, there's a a 3-month time limit from the time of signature. Which means it may not be a good idea to get a check done too far in advance of being scheduled for an interview. Right?

Thanks for the link, flames9.

In my package 3 from Montréal, it says that they'll accept police checks done on us up to a year prior to our interview date. Not sure if that's the same for K3 visas.
