I had one handcarried bag and one checked in luggage when I went here last Dec. 2007.I just maximized the weight allowed coz I didn't want to pay for the excess baggage :).I don't know exactly the rules of airlines nowadays but I would suggest you call your airline office and inquire about number of bags allowed. Have a safe trip :)

Here's the policy from Northwest Airlines:

Coach Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed two (2) pieces of checked luggage.

Each piece: 50 pounds (23 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).

Exceptions for trans-Pacific travel wholly between U.S./Canada and the Philippines, China and Hong Kong, checked pieces may weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each.

Checked luggage within the free 2 bag allowance that weigh more than 50 pounds and up to 70 pounds will be assessed a $50.00 heavy bag fee.

Once you get here to the US, Northwest only allows one checked bag per customer, with each additional bag charged $25. Other airlines charge between $25-100 per extra bag, so if you can get away with only one bag, try to do so.

When Menci comes home with me next month, we've got the problem solved. She will need three bags - she collects blue jeans. We'll use my allowed bags for her excess. I'm just taking clothes for my visit that I don't mind throwing out to make room for her belongings. :D It sounds just like what I did in my apartment too!

Cheers,

Rob and Menci

This question really depends on what airlines you will be using. I suggest to go to your carrier's website.

Ryan and I have 4 checked in bags (2 bags for each of us, we're about the limit weight.. golly)... and we had 2 carry on also... but we did not pay for it... maybe we just got lucky? they did not asked us to pay. :)

Baggage Policy until last week was:

2 Checked bags under a certain weight and one carry one, not including purse.

Last week "Some" US Carriers said they would only allow one checked bag and a $25 for the 2nd checked bag.

Only way to really find out is to call the carrier or look on their website.

I don't know if we got lucky or what but on our last trip to the Philippines, we used Cathay Pacific/American Airlines. AA allowed us the international baggage allowance for the domestic flights from NC to LAX and from LAX to NC . They were confused about it for a bit and were considering charging us extra baggage/overweight fee but a supervisor came along, looked at our tickets, noted that we were on connecting international flights and gave us the international baggage allowance. :)

But I agree with what most people here have said, it would be better if you called the airline you will be using just to make sure as the excess charges can be very hefty.

I thought PAL had decreased their limit to 50lbs per luggage check in..

I remember my uncle traveling to Guam having 2 luggage totaling 100lbs.. 2 50lbs each..

This is PAL..

Don't forget that in addition to a carry on bag, everyone is permitted a personal item/bag. I carry a backpack when I travel, and that falls under the category of personal item. So if you are concerned over what all you can bring, get a carry on bag that is the maximum allowable size, and a backpack and stuff them and then pack your checked items too.

I was laughing while reading your post... when my former fiance now husband flew with us from the Phils, we brought back four (4) balikbayan boxes, two (2) luggages and two (2) carry on bags. Ended up overweight during check in, slept in the airport due to time constraint between local flight and int'l flight (didn't bought connecting coz my husband bought his back and forth ticket - mla-us - & our tickets online) btw, he was there during embassy interview up until we flew to US...and with two little kids. Can you imagine? I guess that's life, hehehe... we both agreed that it's the best thing to do coz cbu-mla flight arrival was 10pm and mla-us departure was 6am... we just can't imagine all the luggage handling to-from airport and paying for a hotel for just a few hours! Looking back, we would often laugh at how we budgeted our time and resources during that time, actually the entire K1 visa process. BUT everything was well worth it! God is good, all the time!
