I just wanted everyone to know that Mohamed was told at the French embassy that he would have his transit visa in 5 days for Paris. This means he get get off the plane in France and sleep at a hotel and relax for a couple of days before continuing on to the USA. This directly defies all information that I have been given about transit visas being given to people who have not yet entered the USA and want to stop over in Europe and NOT sleep in the airport. This would not really effect Egyptians because I believe that they can fly non stop to the USA but for Tunisians, Algerians ,Libyans this is a huge bit of information. This directly conflicts everything I have been told about stop overs and the possibility of the visa holder being able to change airports in country or being able to sleep overnight at an airport hotel . You need to provide an ongoing ticket at least 30 days in advance and 2 to 3 days hotel reservation which you can obtain and can be easily cancelled without any charge on www.hotels.com which has a very liberal cancellation policy

This would be appropriate for someone who has family in Europe they want to see or it could be used if a couple wanted to meet up in lets say Paris and see Paris or if they want to take advantage of much less expensive flights that do not fly out on the same day.. As the summer goes on , the tickets start to skyrocket so its nice if they can have the ability to fly out a day later or 2 days later

Very interesting.... it's too bad that wasn't the case when my husband came (although we never checked... maybe it was!). He has lots of family in Paris.

Is it normally hard to get a transit visa? I think he's going to try to get one to stop over for a few days on his way to Oran..

It can be and even my ALGERIAN travel agent said it couldnt be done as well as several Algerians on student visas who had been denied a transit visa in Paris. I think the US status of the transit petitioner may have something to do with it. My husband already has his CR1 so they know he is already going to be given a greencard upon entry. If you know when he is traveling, make the reservation only from France to Algeria but I am pretty sure he will have to get hotel reservations ( www.hotel.com) before you will be granted it. The best advice I have is for you to make a reservation at the French consul in the city where you live.

one word of note. The French embassy was absolutely the snottiest least helpful embassy I have ever dealt with on the phone

Interesting... When my husband FINALLY gets his visa I am hoping I can fly over to bring him here and we can spend a few days together in Thailand before landing at JFK - I guess I will have to research it. The Thai gov't might even be restrictive rather than the US gov't. He has never seen the ocean before and I would rather have his first view of it be at Phuket or Ko Samui rather than Jones Beach or Coney Island - time for those later...

This is interesting. Does anyone know about London, I read that as long as your visa was for the USA, a transit visa was not necessary coming from Morocco. Is this actuate?

If he is going to change airports and walk around or leave the airport, he will need a transit visa. If he stays within the same airport and doesnt leave , no he will not need one. He needs to contact the British Embassy in Casablanca and talk to them

My husband needs to get a transit visa for a 4 hour layover in Frankfurt. He isn't even leaving the airport!!!

I still can't understand it.

Thats because he is from IRAN. All bets are off with IRAN. They have their own freaky rules ( germany) when it comes to Iranians. Remember the guy that lived in the airport for like 12 years in the international zone? I think he was Iranian and kept applying for political asylum and finally got it.. He finally left the airport

Good point, Chaishai!

Me, too, i love Coney Island, and some parts of the Jersey Shore are gorgeous.

i've never been to Thailand to compare, but Coney Island is certainly something anyone who finds him/herself in New York should experience.

Hot dogs... ooooooooooo... and Italian Ice!

again working with the transit visa.. the important thing you need is time. The transit visa is necessary for most mena people...some even with greencards...The US passport eliminates this completely. The greencard merely eliminates some barriers.

I am in the process of figuring out with my husband how much his ticket will be in 10 days and what airline he will fly. At lease the entry into France wont be hard. This was my biggest fear. One word of advice. Some countries have hellacious waits for certain embassies. France is always a very long wait for an appointment in North Africa ( about 2 weeks) but the transit issue time is very quick
