On the I-864

when I got to section 5 (the part to total up the household)

It asks how many people I claim to be sponsoring in the preceding section 3 ( which is my wife and her child)

then it asks if I am married, if I claim "yes" my wife gets counted twice as to the total household number.

Evidently I am misunderstanding the questions in section 5 or the part in section 3

(scratching my head)

Or missing the part at the top of Section 5 where it states "do not count anyone twice". You can stop scratching your head. :D If you've already counted her, you don't count her again. That form has multiple uses, so it applies in some cases to count a wife in the event she wasn't included on Line 10, Part 3.
