We have a two party system. Libertarians always lose. Bob Barr is goofy. Ron Paul got no traction because alot of his ideas were unrealistic. So really I have a choice between two Socialists and a so-called Republican who espouses views I dont agree with. Having the right to vote doesnt mean we should exercise it irresponsibly. It looks like Obama will win. If that's what people want, we get what we deserve. At the end of his term, I predict we will be further in debt, the country wont be unified, the Palestinians will still be occupied, we will still be in Iraq, our standing internationally will further decline, the Iranians will take adavantage of perceived weakness. the energy crisis wont be remedied, social security and medicare fixes will be passed to future adminstrations and we will all be paying more taxes without having universal health care.

:P You forgot curing cancer too.

It was FDR's New Deal that turned this country around after the Great Depression. He started out not believing that government could help many of the problems of the Depression like Hoover but soon came to the conclusion that the government can and does have a stake in lives of its citizens.

Good point.

I have a few evangelical and non-evangelical Christians in my family (I see the distinction as those who believe in proselytizing the faith and those who do not). Although the evangelicals in my family are against abortion and opposed to gay marriage, they are much more focused on reducing poverty, protecting the environment and ensuring human rights for all people. There has been a schism in the evangelical movement as people coming up have challenged the historical narrowness of the focus. The movement, led by many young people, is turning to the AIDS crisis and to environmentalism. A great effort has been put into mitigating the international AIDS crisis by evangelicals as it effects millions of souls already living on this earth. Many evangelicals believe that we are endebted to the earth as a gift from God and are responsible for caring for it and for "all God's creatures." Isn't that what they teach in Sunday school, anyway?

I think there are a lot of people, like one of the previous posters, who feel stuck between two parties. Because although they see abortion as a moral issue, they also see caring for the poor and our environment as moral issues as well.

As someone who was raised in the Catholic faith and a strong sense of social justice, I find that refreshing to hear. In the early 90's, an alliance was forged with who were then considered leaders of the evangelicals (Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell) with the Republican Party, which promised to champion the issues and values they cared most about. A sequence of events brought about the gradual realization of many evangelicals that the Republican Party doesn't anymore represent their views than the Democratic Party repudiate those views. Each political party's platform has issues that evangelicals care about...and more and more of them realize that they really don't have a political party to call their own. They must, as individual voters decide which candidate will not only address their concerns but also lead this country towards peace and prosperity.
