Hello VJ,

We are about to file our AOS and we have some questions. Three weeks ago we filed for SSN. My husband said it is better to use my original middle name and change only my last name. But i really wanted to use my maiden surname as my middle name. But now we have my SSN card with my middle name as is and only the last name changed.

1. Is it possible to go on with the AOS filing and use my maiden name my middle name (it will be different from my SSN card) and have the middle name changed in the SSA later?

2. Is it possible to have my middle changed before we file the AOS?

I know there have been a lot of threads about name change but i cant find a thread similar to my problem.

Any response is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and good day everyone :)

1) Yes, SSN not required for AOS

2) You can try... It might give SSA some "heartburn"

I decided to retain my middle name instead of using my maiden name surname as my new middle name. filing for AOS is stressful enough. i'll just change my name when i file for citizenship. that's just me though.

On the AOS paper work, put the names you plan to use.

If I were you I would then wait for at least the EAD, or better the GC to go back to Social Security and then get the middle name changed.

As long as you have papers proving who you are, you'll be fine.

Hi there!

I applied my whole single(maiden name ) in SSN# office here before i got married for the purpose of using my ssn# for any transactions i made espicially in legal matters they need your ssn#,The Social Security Office will not change your single surename to married surename unless if you have any proper documentation receive and showed to them came from home land security but depending on every state . when i forward my aos application i just drop my middle name of my mother. And i'm using right now my mother surename is my married middle name on my whole process of my aos . It's a big twist in the philippines we are using our father middle name but here your father is out of your whole name i'm hoping if you swear and change your citizenship after 10 years i hope to get back my dad is my middle name and not my mother !

When we first got Marlene's SSN, we only changed the last name. We did the same on the AOS application, but at the interview the adjudicator said we needed to conform to the Philippine standard of moving the father's surname to the middle name. Her permanent resident card reflected the new middle name and we took the card to SSA and had the name changed to reflect the new middle name at the same time we got the restriction taken off the SS card.

Any amendments or renewal of the Philippine passport and the report of marriage will have the name this way. I think it's best if they will match your permanent resident card and SS card.

Thank you John & Marlene. We think of filing the AOS with the name i want to use and then go back later to the SSA to have it changed. (double change)

Here's what I did since I didn't want to complicate things (and I hope I was right about it  ) And BTW, this is not my real name, just setting an example.

Unmarried name: Michelle Reyes Gomez (First Name, Mom's maiden name, Last Name)

Instead of going this way (like how we do it in the Phils.): Michelle Gomez Smith, my now married name is like this: Michelle Reyes Smith.

I have the same name on my GC, future DL and all my IDs. My passport is still on my old name but when it's time to renew it, I will have it done under my new name.

I see a potential problem with your plan. Before you can have a new name on your Philippine passport, you will have to file a report of marriage. Based on the report of marriage, your new name according to the NSO will be (First Name, Father's Surname, Last Name). Your application for passport will need to match the NSO record and will not match your permanent resident card.

i think i will just file the AOS using this name format: First Name, Middle Name (maiden surname), and husband's Family Name. Then we will just go back to SSA to change the name where we filed a few weeks ago.We filed using this format: First Name, Maiden Middle Name, Husband's Family Name. We plan to have that middle name changed to my father's surname after we get the GC.

Hi there, musta na? Hmm, we're back to paper works again, ha. I have submitted my AOS documents also and I did have confussion with my name change too. Here's what I did. I applied my SSN before we got married and here's the name format that I used (just a sample): Cecelia Reyes Cruz (first name, mother's maiden name, & father's surname). The Social Security personnel informed me that I can worry about name change later once I can have the necessary documents for support like marriage certificate or my EAD. The name I used in my AOS is this: Cecelia Cruz Smith (first name, father's surname, & husband's family name). I am dropping my mother's maiden name just like we did in the Philippines. I'll have my name change in my SS card after I'll get EAD or the green card, whichever is more appropriate to use as proof. I'm hoping I won't encounter any problem with.

And by the way, good luck! :-)
