Bob Barr, a former congressman from Georgia and a former Republican, today announced his candidacy for president as a Libertarian who would rein in federal spending and foreign wars.

"The government has run amok fiscally," he said at a press conference. Saying that during the first quarter of this year the private sector was losing millions of jobs while the federal government was "hiring with enthusiasm," Barr added, "As the American people see their standard of living falling, the standard of government keeps going up."

...

Barr blasted programs that use public funds to educate the children of illegal immigrants and maintain foreign military bases "that have no more efficacy in the 21st century."

Goooooo Bob!!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I really dont think that battle starts with you decideing your going to run for president one day. Its seems more of a way to get your name out there and to get some attention for personal gain. I think if he's really serious he has to go about this issue in a different way. Its been done before this is not the way to go about it,he knows it, he's a politician dont let him fool you into thinking that he cares more about his issues than his career.

I heard some speculation that should send shivers up the back of Obama supporters just now. How does Hillary running as an independent strike you? There are some rumblings about that.

oh GOSH that is a scary thought. That Biacth will not quit. She is so greedy and power hungry. She will come in and screw up things. And if she does get elected and wins the WH she will be a ONE TERM Pres. She will get voted out in four years.

But I dont think that is going to happen she is too broke and wont be leaving the Dems.

What If Hillary Clinton Ran as a Third Party Candidate?

Gotterdammerung for the Democrats?

By Mark Whittington, published May 08, 2008

Since the recent primaries in North Carolina and Indiana, the punditry and much of the Democratic Party has been writing off Hillary Clinton. However, if all else fails, she has one option left to her to keep hope alive. That option is to run on a third party ticket.

Crazy? Impossible? Perhaps, but such a move would fit Hillary Clinton's personality.

The objection that running as a third party candidate would damage the Democratic Party would not impress Hillary Clinton. Neither Hillary nor for that matter Bill Clinton have been particularly loyal party people. For them the Democratic Party exists solely as a mechanism for their relentless, single minded pursuit of power. If the Democrats reject her as their nominee for President, the usefulness of the Democratic Party for that purpose would be at an end.

Hillary Clinton would also have the example of Teddy Roosevelt who, having failed to wrest the Republican nomination from Howard Taft, ran as a third party "Bull Moose" ticket in 1912. Roosevelt did not win the Presidency, but he ran second behind Woodrow Wilson, leaving the hapless Taft to run third. Roosevelt is still remembered as a great American statesman.

Hillary Clinton's enemies within the Democratic Party would point out that her running as a third party candidate would essentially ensure the election of John McCain. Hillary Clinton would reply, that it is possible, but so is running Barack Obama as a Democratic candidate. Hillary Clinton can point to polls that show that she runs better against McCain than does Obama. Obama only attracts "African Americans and egg heads," suggested Clinton advisor Paul Begala. If the Democrats choose Obama, an obvious loser as their candidate, then that is their look out.

Wouldn't running as a third party candidate destroy Hillary Clinton's standing in the Democratic Party forever? Maybe, but Hillary Clinton's response might be that it is better to be feared than to be loved. Who can be feared most than someone who is willing to launch the political equivalent of a full scale nuclear strike? After Election 2008, Hillary Clinton can return to the Senate with the reputation of someone who is too crazy to be ignored. And if one is a Democrat, what does one do with a crazy person with power? Oppose them or appease them?

When pondering that question, remember that we're talking about Democrats here.

Hillary Clinton could also use just the threat of running on a third party ticket as a threat to influence the Super Delegates. Imagine being in the room with the likes of Kennedy, Kerry, and the rest when Hillary Clinton puts forth the proposition. Gasps of astonishment and disbelief. The hard set look and the soulless, mad eyes that say, "Don't doubt me. I will do this." Then the sound of knees buckling and bowls loosening. And finally, that cackling laughter of a woman who has finally won.

It could happen. Barack Obama would not know what hit him.

She is tenacious, but she isn't insane.

Agreed! It would be political suicide. However, she is now ultra rich (even if she incurs the $20M debt from the campaign), but I still can't see her running under a third party banner either. I don't believe that fighter equals insanity.
