Does anyone of you had sciatica? This is like an injury occured because of prolonged seating...

I do have 12hours job who need prolonged seating.. the pain is not much but it bothers me when my buttocks down to my leg is getting numb and feeling week.

Folks need some opinion here before I go to the doctor :crying:

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I get it occasionally and to be honest the only thing that has worked for me is physical therapy. When it is at it's worst, the pain goes all the way down the back of my right leg and wraps around my ankle. A few years ago when I had a really bad case of it I saw a physical therapist for a couple of months and he gave me exercises I could do at home to relieve the pain. Since then, if I feel it cropping up, I just pull out that sheet of exercises and do them again and it goes away. None of the medication I was perscribed worked.

One thing you can do, at home of course, is lay on the floor, on your stomach and put ice, or that infamous frozen bag of peas, on the area on your lower back/buttocks, where the pain is originating. Do this for 15 minutes at a time only. Many of my exercises were done laying on the floor on my stomach, mainly to stretch my spine and help the unpinching of the nerve.

At your job Id' say the best thing you can do is to make sure you stand up at least once an hour and stretch. And make sure you follow other back safety tips like bending with your knees instead of your back when you go to pick up something. And regular exercise does help too.

I wish you all the best because I know how mind numbing painful sciatica can be. Feel better. (F)

I am a Massage Therapist and have helped many clients with sciatica.

If it is the cause of a spinal problem, like a disk then I can't help but if it is the result of prolonged sitting or standing , it is a piriformis entrapment

and that muscle can be released by deep tissue massage. After 1-3 treatments my clients are fine. The sciatic nerve runs from the spine through the hips and thighs and gets irritated from the piriformis and gluteal muscles.

Look for a Massage Therapist in your area who has had good results with deep tissue therapy or myofacsial release techniques.

I get it on and off again as well. What I find does help is chiropractic adjustments of the hip and lower spine. If I am able to get the adjustment at the first signs of the flare up then the flare up isn't bad, but if I am not able to get in until the next day then the adjustment helps but it still takes 2 or 3 days before the pain subsides. Deep tissue massage also helps but only after the spinal alignment is back in place for me. Good luck - it is definitely a painful experience and makes you feel miserable.

thanks to omoba i went to a massage therapist and had a deep tissue massage. it hurt like craaaazy but afterward i felt relieved for a while.

it is not only from prolonged sitting but prolonged standing as well (which is my case)

i actually get in pain every few days or so and unfortunately right now is one of those times...arghhhhhhhh!!!

i'm thinking of trying the chiropractor route as i've heard a lot it helps...

the physical therapy did not help me what so ever. months of it and lots of money but i'm still in the same position. maybe even worse lately.

Excellent advice!

I have a pinched nerve in my C7 vertebra and sometimes the stupidest things cause almost complete immobility and pain (for example, rolling over in bed). It's weird because yoga or weightlifting doesn't hurt it, but bending over or rolling over in bed does.

I wish you luck! It's awful when your back is hurting and unless someone has experienced it they just don't understand the pain.

that's probably more of what i have...(don't know the exact terminology of it..) although i do know i have an extra lumbar vertebra (or part of an extra one) that pinches a nerve which causes that extreme pain.

ugh its a pain in the azz...literally! :crying:

i do a lot of stretching, yoga, hot showers, and sometimes i even slap on a lidocaine patch.

Awww, I feel for you too. I had sciatica throughout my pregnancy and am still experiencing it (although the pain is lessening a little now that my son has been born). Chiropractic care didn't help relieve the pain. Massage was helpful as well as stretching exercises. The thing that worked the best was hot showers and allowing the water to hit the affected area.

Hope you feel better soon.
