I went to school with a family of ten children. The father was an attorney, a great guy who was well respected and liked; the mother stayed at home to raise the kids. They were Catholic and I mention that not to stereotype or judge, but only to explain that their catholocism was the 'reason' for the family size - ie the mandate of the church to not use birth control. I also add the mother miscarried two or three times or the family would have been larger.

At any rate, I don't know the particulars of their daily family life while the kids were all at home. But I do know that after the last child was born with Downs, after that somehow they managed to avoid having any more children.

The parents are both gone now. The disabled daughter had lived with the mother till her death but now lives with one of the daughters. The other children take turns having the youngest live with them, as the girl is somewhat difficult and not easy to manage.

Funny you mention that.. I'm actually 1 of 9, my cousins who lived right across the street where 11 in total. We all sort of grew up together in a lot of ways and yes we too where catholic. The oldest in my family is now in their early 40's and the youngest in their early twenties. So far none of us have created any large numbers of offspring. We appear to created a fairly (protestant lol ) normal 2 - 4 children per person. There was a family across the street (again catholic in the segregated North of Ireland) that had I believe in the region of 14 or so children.

My only concern would be for the kids themselves. With 18, how do they get the individual parental attention that they need to develop? With 18, they are assigned chores by "jurisdiction," some of the chores likely being helping out in raising the younger ones. With all these chores, they are forced to grow up fast and "parent" themselves -- that isn't supposed to be in a normal child's job description.

Experience makes it less painful. She's probably stretched up to the point of not feeling pain anymore.

As some others have stated in this thread, I don't see the need for alarm. So what if the Duggar family is going to have 18 children now? That doesn't harm you in any way, unless you they're using welfare (which they are not). The family appears to be debt free and can somehow afford to pay for everyone in it. That's pretty remarkable considering there are many families with far fewer children that can't make ends meet.

I know some people here are concerned about the "conservative Christian" angle. So what? They have a strong belief in their faith. Big deal. Are there knocking on doors, attempting to force others to "convert or die?" No, I don't think so. Being religious isn't a bad thing in of itself (just like being non-religious isn't a good thing, either). Besides, just because the parents are one way, that doesn't mean the kids will necessarily turn out to be the same. I don't have all the same beliefs as my dad and my dad doesn't have all the same beliefs as my grandfather.

I'm not suggesting we applaud the Duggars, but we probably shouldn't criticize them either. It's their life and we have about as much right to tell them how to live it as they do with our own.

My mother was the 15th of 20 children my grandparents had. It makes for some very large family reunions.
