Ya, they aren't on welfare etc. but they ARE part of a growing population of super conservative christians which I personally feel are trying to limit my freedom to live my life the way I want. The husband has ran for state office. If he can seperate his personal religious feelings and moral beliefs from what his constituants want, then all the power to them. However is someone this dedicated to their ideaology going to be able do that?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

My only concern would be for the kids themselves. With 18, how do they get the individual parental attention that they need to develop? With 18, they are assigned chores by "jurisdiction," some of the chores likely being helping out in raising the younger ones. With all these chores, they are forced to grow up fast and "parent" themselves -- that isn't supposed to be in a normal child's job description.

oh wow. I wonder too how much money does he make. Doesn't it require for a family to make at least 50K a year to send 1 kid to college? Sending 18 of them, besides food, clothing, entertainment, oh wow :o

You think these kids are actually going to college??? Only one wants to do anything that requires a college degree. The oldest wants to be a lawyer and God help us all if he does that!

Why "God help us all" if he becomes a lawyer?

The dad was an elected state representative. They are debt-free, they know how to budget and they home school their children. They teach their children about kindess and caring for others.

So what if they are fundamental Christian? I don't necessarily agree with their ways, but they aren't a "burden" to anyone. And I'd rather have fundamental Christians breeding than people who leave their babies in dumpsters or better yet, have 10 kids, live on Welfare, and let their kids run wild.

I want more kids, maybe 2 more (I have 2 already) if it's financially feasible, but some people think that's crazy. My grandpa was one of 10. My dad was one of 8. I'm one of 7.....

I just don't understand why people are so judgmental about this family. At least they actually do live what they preach and aren't hypocrits.

Totally agreed!

Tho, my first reaction is '#######? 18 kids?!??!!'

I think some are clutching at straws here. Sorry Platy, but the school angle imo was a weak one....

This is exactly my thought.

They are assigned chores, interests and hobbies. I just don't see them having a lot of individuality or freedom. They do everything together and the older children are parenting the younger ones at such young ages like 14 and 15. I hope the girls don't grow up to think all they are is baby machines with no identity or purpose but to get pregnant and raise children, and those children think the same....and the ever growing circle continues.

I'd want my child to be whatever they wanted to be, to choose their own interests, discover their own dreams. To fail, succeed, mess up and learn on their own....not be part of some robot machine that has a daily schedule written out on a big board telling them what move they are making next.

I think it's insane, but that's JMO.

Let's Keep the Song Going!!!

Both Duggars are real estate agents, and both also host Bible-based “Financial Freedom Seminars.” They also own commercial properties. From 1999-2002, Jim Bob served in the Arkansas House of Representatives. He lost a bid for the U.S. Senate in 2002.

dang you people are judgmental  they aren't hurting anybody.. let them live their life the way they want to...

No they aren't hurting anybody.

But they use their kids for media attention. They have a website devoted to themselves and their unique family.

IMO they use their family as a way to make money and get attention. If they were truly interested in just living their life they way they want to, they'd never be in the public eye.

Living one's life and finding a way to make money from it are not mutually exclusive tho.....w 17 kids, it can't be easy to pay the bills

Yeah, I guess it's not a problem to put the little buggers pictures all over the tube and the net in order to help feed them. It's just another jurisdiction for them.

Lots of people put their kids all over the net. We truly don't know their motivations for doing so..it could be something non money related and completely innocuous as wanting to promote a baby churning lifestyle, hahahah. And I'm not necessarily saying I think her lifestyle is the ultimate, or even that I agree with it...but at the end of the day, kids have chores all the time...nothing wrong with that. The kids are fed, clothed, housed, and loved...so I don't see the problem, even if it's strange and completely unusual.

I went to school with a family of ten children. The father was an attorney, a great guy who was well respected and liked; the mother stayed at home to raise the kids. They were Catholic and I mention that not to stereotype or judge, but only to explain that their catholocism was the 'reason' for the family size - ie the mandate of the church to not use birth control. I also add the mother miscarried two or three times or the family would have been larger.

At any rate, I don't know the particulars of their daily family life while the kids were all at home. But I do know that after the last child was born with Downs, after that somehow they managed to avoid having any more children.

The parents are both gone now. The disabled daughter had lived with the mother till her death but now lives with one of the daughters. The other children take turns having the youngest live with them, as the girl is somewhat difficult and not easy to manage.

A bit off topic but FWIW, something like 95 percent of American Catholics use or have used contraception...they simply ignore Rome. There is only one official method - natural family planning.

Which, technically, is still a form of contraception, albeit a not so reliable one ;)

As I said, I noted their faith only as an explanation. Some families used to abide by the rule strictly. Remember also I was speaking of a family where the oldest children are now in their fifties, so we are talking about a different era.
