Yes, Mr. Big Dog West Virginia. Easy on the stereotypes! Here's a short list of famous West Virginians.

Yes, the few vs. the many. ;)

careful, bd, she's gonna spit tabaccy juice on you :P

He Charles. So, let's see....Florida and Missouri ranking on West Virginia. I'll just consider the source and move on.

WideAwake-

Charles is in Kansas.

I'm curious - which state/states would one have to be from to warrant a response from you?

Joisey, dude. B)

Hey wadda' ya' know, I'm not real hip on Jersey right now. I just found out that since my employer is based out of there all of the drivers are paying Jersey state taxes. I'm taking it with a grain of salt since I have yet to receive a bill from them. I have been assured that it is coming though. This would equal taxation without representation.

Troll, I'm 41 and have traveled the entire Country (and Canada) several times over. It has been my experience that every State has it's warts, whether it be West Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Kansas, or Indiana for that matter.

PLUS 2 years in Germany. I'm going to take the high road on that one.

Fair enough. I was just asking :)

Cool. I'm back in America now from a 5 day Canada excursion and Michigan never looked so good. No offense Canadians, I just don't like Ontario a whole lot.

I normally don't mind the jokes about West Virginia. I've heard them all my life. In fact, I often will joke about only eating possum on days that end in "Y" and owning one pair of shoes for Sunday.

Frankly though, for somebody who professes to know as much as he does about America and American politics after his successful assimilation to American life, I find condescending pictures of 'citizens' of my state to be more stupid than offensive.

Especially when those people were obviously from Southern Indiana......

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

There's one reason only why Hillary will prevail in both WV and KY by very large margins despite the fact that she has no conceivable way of securing the Democratic nomination regardless of her margins of victory in those two states. And that sole reason is the color of the other candidate's skin. Period. Now that is what's both stupid and offensive. But that is how things still are out in them hills. I've lived close enough to 'em for over a decade. No need to deny the obvious, Rebecca. Now, you may disagree with that assessment but all polling data bears it out very clearly. If you do disagree, however, I invite you to square that circle for me.

Reinhard,

If you'll read post #9 above, you'll see what I think of what will happen in my state and why, and yes unfortunately it has to do with the color of the man's skin.

While you think you may have lived 'close enough' to West Virginia to understand us, your assessment of what goes on here is firstly shown to be incorrect by describing the situation as 'out in them hills'. The majority of our population live in small towns or cities, not in mountain cabins as you apparently have assessed from the outside looking in.

Also part of the problem lies in the fact that many of our young people choose to leave West Virginia to seek employment opportunities unavailable here. Our legislature sees fit to have one of the nations most unfriendly business tax structures, leaving many of our young people with educations and skills that no local employer can use. This trend erodes the voting base leaving us with an aging population, many of whom still hold objectionable attitudes towards persons of another race. Stupid and offensive - yes. The way we all think - hardly.

I personally don't live within 100 miles of anything you could call a mountain. There are no coal mines anywhere near me. I have never seen a 'mountain man' - I do daily see rednecks and lots of elderly people. Oh yes - and pickup trucks. I really have never eaten possum and while I love me a pair of stilettos, my personal preference is to be barefoot. I have a college degree. My father was a blue collar worker who earned (when he was working) far better than the equivalent of what GaryC earns today in Indiana. My mother has a college degree that she earned in West Virginia and she worked part time as I grew up. I learned to drive in a Cadillac Sedan DeVille. My sons father earns more money than you can ever hope to earn in one year working blue collar here in West Virginia. And my son and his friends all have grade point averages and college paths that Naomi would do well to emulate; my son will also remain in West Virginia to teach and hopefully expand the lives of those he touches.

Simply being from West Virginia doesn't make one an overall-wearing, toothless moron. Anymore than it makes a German an emotionless cranky sexual pervert, or an Irishman a drunken but lovable bum.

And that's all I am saying: that somehow what many have been looking to accomplish over the last 40-50 years in regards to overcoming the racial divide has somehow not quite registered in that part of the country. Personally, I don't think that you need to look for hills or mountain cabins to find hillbillies. You may call hillbillies that live away from hills rednecks. Quite frankly, that's all the same to me.

I am stereotyping because I don't see any value in distinguishing between hillbillies and rednecks? Interesting.

I guess it's easy to lose focus from the higher rungs of the social-climbing ladder.

What? Can you at least try to stay on the point and defend your argument?

I'll ask again: How is equating rednecks and hillbillies stereotyping?
