It was at $3.45 yesterday and this morning it was at $3.59. It'll go over $4 for Memorial Day weekend for sure.

We're also not taking unnecessary trips either to see how much we can save but we're also saying prices at the grocery store much higher than a month ago. McDonald's went up as well which didn't make my husband very happy. ^_^

Yeah I take the bus or ride a bike or walk but I can do that in the smaller towns. I hate to see what that would be like in a place like Southern Cali.

$3.56 was what I saw yesterday.

We have maybe 2 more days of driving before I have to completely fill the tank. I dread that day.

For us, it's already started. We only drive when we have to....no unnecesary trips at all. We've resorted to taking the bus more.

Assuming you would be earning a cost of living adusted wage in southern cali, it might actually be easier to afford the gas prices since they stay relativly the same (with some variation) across the country.

Pounds, Euros, or USD? Is it always that high there? Danga dang dang!

$8.10 here - oh wait, it's the UK, never mind. :P

It's £1.10 a litre. There are 3.78 litres in an American gallon (different from an Imperial/British gallon). So it's £4.16 per gallon, which equates to $8.10...and yes, prices have risen lately by up to 10p but it's been above $7 in the UK for years. Very high fuel taxes!

I've been considering carpooling to work, but that would save me like $20 a week tops and the more I think about it, the more I think it's not worth it.

Yeah, really.

The average car is driven about 10000 miles a year.

At 20 miles per gallon, it's about 500 gallons per year, or ~10 gallons per week.

Going from $3/gallon to $4/gallon results in an added cost of $10/week, hardly a crisis.

The Pound and Euro are stronger against the dollar so any change in prices would be less dramatic. Prices are still going up though.

While it might not be a crisis for some wages aren't increasing for others. I don't know how long it's been since minimum wage was increased? But I do know that this steady increase in fuel and food effects the bottom rungs of the ladder before it effects the middle and very top.

So what's the magic number that people would have to pay before they'd seriously consider not having a car drive regularly anymore?

It varies by situation, for me I dont need to drive to work. For my wife, sometimes she takes the bus, and sometimes I drive.

With errends, we ussualy arrange a few things to be done all in one trip. Saves gas and saves time.

If it gets to expensive to own my own car, ill probably switch to using http://www.hourcar.org/index.html and relocate closer to where my wife works so she can either walk or take a short bus trip.

But I don't really know what that point is.

So what's the magic number that people would have to pay before they'd seriously consider not having a car drive regularly anymore?

We have two cars. The second car will only get filled up to about half way and used infrequently. Our primary car is a Prius so that gives us a bit of a higher tolerance level as far as price is concerned. But I can see us already cutting down on our driving.
