I hope that my fiancee will be coming to the States within a couple of months. Her interview is only in a few weeks.

All we want is just to be together and neither of us likes crowds of people and big shows; we also aren't fond of too much "officialness". What this means is that we want our wedding to be humble: we'll just go to a government office to make it happen formally, after which we'll go to a restaraunt with a few tables reserved for the occasion. I can't imagine more than a dozen guests-- all my family, as well as our close friends. We'll take some pictures, some toasts will be said, gifts given and everyone will go home. No formal invitations, no fancy suits, no live band-- just something pleasant and stress free.

My first concern is with whether that'll be good enough for the US immigration officials: if the "ceremony" is so basic, can they doubt the validity of the marriage more than they otherwise would? I know that wedding photos are popular for the purposes of establishing that the marriage is real: if all we have is a bunch of people sitting in a restaraunt, can that be a problem?

My more pressing concern is about my fiancee's upcoming interview. They'll ask her about Wedding plans, most likely. So if she says "In Month X, go to a government office and then go to an Italian restaraunt, where family and close friends will be invited", is that going to be alright? Since as of today there's no visa, there are no specific arrangements either-- will they be OK with a general description like that?

So, those of you who share our view of how a wedding should be (quiet, simple, only with people that really care about us)-- could you please share your thoughts? Thank you!

She can answer the question at the interview with something along the lines of, "Once approved and I arrive in the US, we will be having a small ceremony and reception with our family and close friends". They understand that people don't have set in stone plans for a wedding as everything is pending the visa processing.

I don't think you will have any problems by just having a small ceremony.

We had a court marriage ceremony in Orlando - it only cost $5 or $10 - we then went to her sister's house and had some cake (we had bought it from a grocery store - a nice one) and some champagne. And then we went to a nice place for dinner (4 tables) about 15 people in all. The marriage certificate proves that we were married not the size of the party or how much you spent on it! By the way she wasn't asked about her wedding plans in Bogota - she would have said we haven't made any plans yet - cause we hadn't then. Don't worry about it - Good Luck

Yours sounds very much like the wedding we had. I had my uncle, aunt, cousins, and a couple of friends and their significant others present. On my wife's side there were only her parents present. We had a simple court wedding, cake -cutting at our apartment with everyone present, and a dinner at a nice restaurant. We took a lot of pictures and some video (make sure you do that as well). The wedding was real and genuine, and so is our relationship - I think this is all USCIS will (should) care about.

We got married in the magistrate's office, directly after he filed in some prisoners in handcuffs! Then we went to Wal_mart to have the photos developed in their one hour lab, and went to the Olive Garden for supper. We had no family present at all, just a couple of friends my husband's who were our witnesses, and their kids who for some reason decided to come along for the ride.

It never even came up at our interview at all.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

The rules of the K-1 only say you have to marry in 90 days. End of story.

An official wedding serves the same purpose no matter where it is held!

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip
