It seems the best thing to do is to get a SSN number a few weeks after arrival and then do a name change.

IN our case we waitied too close to the expiration of the K-1 date... in fact you must apply to do the name-change a few weeks before the k-1 date expires, if it is within like 2 weeks of expiration

they will tell you to come back when you have a green card.

Fortunately we have a number but it's in her maiden name, we must wait now for adjustment.

At least with a card in her maiden name she can get a license or open accounts in her maiden name.

So to make it simple. (for k-1ers)

1. get SSN number after two weeks of arrival

2. Get married within 3 weeks of K-1 expir. and do a name change immed.

Tax filing might be another big reason to get a number Asap if your situation calls for it.

From what I read (briefly) a number of peps did not get a "Bush-rebate) check because it required

a SSN number (Not Tax Id), to avoid Illegals from cashing in. (as much as possible.)
