You should be able to explicitly exclude your husband from your policy in order to reduce your premiums. Of course, he won't be able to drive the car.

Not in New York State. Apparently you cannot exclude a spouse in NY.

Hard to know. Depends on the type of coverage and your vehicles and *other* things. I was asked all kinds of questions like my occupation, how many kids I had, marital status, educational attainment, credit report, etc. I think the whole checking your credit is stupid if you are paying for everything up front every 6 or 12 months. I've never gotten a ticket and never been in a wreck that was my fault for over 8 years and pay always ontime and up front, but I get dinged because I do not have enough credit history. Only thing reporting is my student loans that have always been paid on time. It is ridiculous. What does not wanting to deal with the credit industry because I disagree with their business practices have to do with what kind of driver I am?

If you live in a fault state, your rates are generally lower than a no-fault state. Indiana is a fault state and I pay $300 every six months for 50/100 liabilty on two paid for vehicles with my husband as an authorized driver. I should probably bump it up to 100/300 in the near future. The difference on my policy for a driver with US license and no history compared to a learner's permit was like $7! Maybe it will go down $3 when he gets his license finally. :P

Insurance rates are also based on your credit rating. The car you drive I don't believe matters much for determing the rate.

Not all states allow the use of rating by credit score. I'm not sure whether NY is one of them. And the car you drive does have a big impact on your collision premiums.

You can try Geico, but with him driving less than 3 years you won't find a good rate anywhere.

Not true. We have State Farm. When I added Andre as a second driver to our car, our rates did not go up one single cent. My husband had not ever driven a car before he came to the US 2 years ago and I taught him.

Shop around.

I'm sure. Here in MA we literally pay thousands more annually than we would living in Indiana.
