The calculator is at http://event.nationalgeographic.com/greendex/calculator.html

My score was 41. US average was 44.9, the lowest of 14 countries surveyed.

62

"People in all countries should have the same standard of living as people in the most wealthy countries."

The only question that bothered me was "do you plan on buying a energy saving car?" Well, I said no we don't have nor do we intend to buy one, but we don't have a car period so that should have allowed for N/A answer. Other thigs were out of our control as well, like energy saving appliance....we rent so don't buy those things.

Same here - I don't intend on buying a car, period - also heating, appliances are provided by landlord.

But you still use those things. You're not more green because someone else pays for your stuff.

Exactly. By that rationale, if someone bought me a gun and I murdered someone else with it, I wouldn't be guilty since I didn't purchase the firearm -- someone else did (so I suppose they'd be in trouble for my act). I realize that's a fairly extreme example, but the point still holds that if you're using or doing something, you're just as responsible for the actions that are caused by it, whether or not you're the one who paid for it.

I think the sentiment was that one would choose to be more green if the choice was in their hands. No need to twist everything around to try to make people look hypocritical, is there?

Maybe that's what was meant, Jenn; however, it didn't appear that way. If it was a misunderstanding, that's fine. Those happen all the time when online. One of the hazards of having only written communication, I suppose.

Thank you! Hubster and I COULD buy a car if we wanted to. We choose not to AT ALL. We use public transportation 99% of the time or get a ride from someone else if we are going out with folks that do have a car. If I had to buy a refrigerator, yes, I'd buy one with energy saving features. But just for the sake of the car question, yes, I AM more green because I take public transportation AND we have hybrid buses here... SO THERE!

Exactly. We have an old fridge which is certainly not as energy-efficient as the newer models, and I answered truthfully, but could not put 'planning to buy energy efficient fridge' because the choice is not ours to make. Also, we have steam heat which is centrally pumped through the building. I have never even seen the boiler so I don't have a way of knowing how efficient it is, though I do know automatically by living in an apartment it is pretty efficient since you are sharing heat with your neighbors upstairs. We do have CFLs in most of our light fixtures which was not even asked.

Shipping costs are higher for imported food versus domestic or local. Of course Mexico is closer to some states than others.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Because you waste energy transporting them from A to B.

So to become more green, we have to become less global and more isolationist.

Give it the scale of importance. Not as much less global/more isolationist. Just less [over]consumptive.

Even with that, my score was a 66 answering honestly.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

So, if I understand the concept, we become more green by importing less food since the energy expended in transporting the goods is bad for the environment. This would have to have something to do with CO2 and global warming I take it. But we are being told that becoming carbon free will NOT devistate the economy.

Why is that again?
