whats the credit limit of your card? coz when i tried to apply for one (i have no crdit history what so ever)... they sent a letter pertaining a $200 credit line approval... when i called to inquire all the fees and interest/APR dang it was so high and i have to pay $65 as a fee and blah blah blah that if i take it im owing them more than the $200 credit limit lol... but prior to that since i have a bank of america savings/checking account i tried their american express card and i never thought they will approved me for a $1000 credit limit and it was a blast... hopefully i could increase my credit limit in the near future... good luck to your card and good luck to our utang... hahaha...

i took a bunch of online application from lowes, home depot, wallmart, sears macy's etc all the store that you can take a card from just for me to start my own card but none of them approved me lol... so we thought might as well get a secured credit at least $500 so i can start my own but we're so surprised i got approved by BofA

You might try J.C. Penny for a card to establish your credit. They usually will approve most people.

After I got married and my name included in my husband's insurance policy I started to get mails to apply for a credit card. I find this interesting considering that I don't even have a job yet and has no way of paying the interest, let alone the principal if I make purchases using it. Although using credit cards is a way of establishing credit points here I am still very adamant to use one because of the enormous interest rates, the very same reason why I didn't apply for one back in the Philippines even if I was qualified. My husband paid off all his credit cards way back and the cards are actually in our freezer, FROZEN. . and will be used only in case of real emergencies.

What we did was apply for a joint checking account with a debit card in my name. I manage it now, pay our bills from it. Probably when I am already working I will consider getting one to start establishing my credit. By the way, one of my husband's credit cards is also that of Capital One, and so with my stepdaughter. I guess it is a good bank.

Goodluck too.

A good way to start establishing credit is get a joint card. Especially if your spouse has good credit to begin with. This good credit will spill over to your credit report. And of course pay off the card each month to avoid the interest. Then you can get a couple of other cards. The key is to use them once every so often and then pay off the amount. This establishes a good payment history.

Just word of advice to the newbies in the US...its very easy to acquire credit cards in the US..it takes time to establish an excellent credit though. Only use your credit cards for emergencies if possible. Always read what you are signing..interest rates & term agreements can lock you in for life (just kidding)..but yea it can be a pain in the butt. Always PAY-OFF your balance if you can. Knowledge implanted with me by my economics professor, ONLY obtain the 4 Major credit cards. Get an American Express, Visa, Mastercard, & Discover Card. 4 is good enough..Having more credit cards also lowers your credit rating......OTHER THAN that I wholeheartedly agree with Roserick use debit card all the time!

I use my credit cards only for pumping at the gas station, emergencies & holiday shopping spree. Because of that & thru the years my credit limit increased to a 5 digit number. My credit rating is excellent. You can get anything if you have an excellent credit with a much much lower interest rate. Autoloans, personal loans, etc...

Here is what she should do..

Tell her to get a cell phone contract on her name.. Of course she would get denied due to no credit.. They will ask her for a deposit.. Just tell her to pay a deposit..

Paying bills and paying bills on time is how you build your credit..

Also transfer some utility bills on her name, cable, telephone, etc..

After 6 months.. Get ready to be piled with Pre-Approved Credit card mails..

Also... Capital One is NOT a good card for newbies because they dont report your credit limit to the credit reporting agencies which in turn can hurt your credit rating. Capital One is only ok if your credit is already establish.

If you find yourself having problems getting approved for credit cards, a secured card will do the trick to establish your credit.

yes She has a cell phone and had one for 2 yrs. They did not ask for any money. But she has a cell and pays all the time. it is auto deduct.

You have some good suggestions.

I forgot to state that she has a visa but small limit. she pays all the time on it and on time, She has a Macy's and a QVC card.

Capital One does report our account information they just do not report what your limit is only what your high balance is. I added my husband as an authorized user to an account i have a few years ago and that account actually appeared on the credit report we ran last week. They did give him his own card about a week after he arrived in the U.S with a low limit but it did make it much easier and he now has some regular cards with high limits.

Good luck!

I have capital one credit card in my name.. But it is in my fiance's account.

Everytime I have a purchase it will go right away to his account, and he's the one who pay for it too :)

It does work very good for us ... They don't charge international :) that's why we are using it here in PI and in country that we visited and not our Debit cards coz our bank charged us service fee and international service fee. :(

So for me, capital one is good when you are out in USA.

I don't know so much about credit cards yet,, but I think the best thing how to use it, is pay the full amount you purchased on the due date..

Ex. You bought cellphone worth $400 April 30 then ex the due date is May 30 ... then pay it on May 30 but better before, like 3 days before.. .

That's how we used our credit card :) and it works fine... no charge, no international fee.. etc.. How much u purchased, is how much u will pay...

(This is my case only, i don't know others..)
