It depends on what state you are getting married and what you are required to have to get your marriage license.

In Arizona, I didn't get my SSN until after the wedding.

As long as you aren't required to have it to get a marriage license, you can wait until you are married.

Does your state require a SSN in order to get a marriage license? If so what choice do you have... If not, do it at your leisure but realize that at day 76 after arrival, SSA will no longer accept your application. You must then wait until you get EAD or greencard.

YMMV

I had planned to gt my SSN within 2 weeks of arriving, but obviously it will be granted in my maiden name. I have read somewhere that once married, your k1 visa is no longer valid and therefore they wont issue you with a SSN. Is this wrong?

Obviously it would be much better for me if I wait till I get married to get the SSN, because then I don't have to mess around changing my name with them once it's been issued...

Thoughts?.......

5th February 2008 - I-129F forms sent for K1 visa (VSC)

26th March 2008 - NOA2 recieved via email

19th May 2008 - Interview............APPROVED!!!!!!

21st May 2008 - Visa in hand

29th July 2008 - POE

2nd September 2008 - Married

19th September - Mailed AOS/EAD/AP to Chicago lockbox

25th September - Check cashed $1010.00 (OUCH!!)

29th September - Received NOA's for AOS/EAD/AP

13th October - AOS Petition transferred to CSC!!!

17th October - Biometrics (Tampa Office)

17th October - AOS/EAD Touched

20th October - AOS Touched

21st October - AOS Touched

6th November - AOS/EAD/AP Touched (probably due to change of address)

10th December - EAD approved

28th January 2009 - GC approved without interview. Done with all this till 2011!!!!!!!!

1) Yes it is wrong but some SSA offices do not understand the regulations and will try to tell you so.

2) Just because you get it in your married name first does not mean you are done with the SSA. Once you recieve your greencard then you need to go back to them and update your immigrant status. When we did this we also got the SSA to change the name on the card.

YMMV

Ok so i'll be as well to just get the SSN a soon as I can, then change my name and then update my immigrant status? It's not that big a deal I am sure once I have the actual number assigned.

OP, glad to know that you don't need a SSN in Iowa. Just wanted to share the info below for anyone who may have been following your post.

Make sure you talk someone who works at office that issues the marriage licenses. In Louisiana, both people are required to have a SSN and wait 72 hours to get married. However, you can get it waived by a judge- this info was not in the printed "how to obtain a marriage license" section, I only found out by talking to someone. It was free to get the SSN and 72 hr wait waived and literally took us less than 10 minutes.
