Sure some sections of the country have taken a hit but things haven't been as bad as some want us to believe.
Some sections? Actually, most Americans have taken a hit and that while the economy expanded. The median income has desreased during the last expansion cycle while the economic output increased. That simply means that most Americans fell off the wagon and don't get to share the prosperity gains. Most Americans. That's not some section, that's the majority of the country.
Again with the Obama mantra? Your a walking political advertisement.

You have figures that prove my statement wrong? Can you show on official sources where the median income actually increased over thye past 7 years? The economic output certainly did, that's undisputed. So, show me where the median income went up between 2001 and today. If you can...

And that's not even considering that the real wages of Americans(adjusted for inflation) peaked in 1973 - the only way we have 'kept up' is with credit and the two-income family.

It's interesting. My dad afforded a nice house right here in Central Jersey back in the early 80s on a salary about half of what I make now. My mom didn't work and they both drove nice cars. Today, both my wife and I work, combined we make over three times what my dad made back then, and the lifestyle he had is completely out of reach. Unless we moved to bumblefukc Kansas that is.

Gary,

Is median income completely meaningless to you as a metric?

Because I'll tell you, economists would disagree.

Not meaningless but it also isn't the only thing.

Those were the days, people stayed in their employment and had soild retirement plans, and retired in comfort. Nothing over the top, not by any means rich, but a nice home, family and enough to have a nice vacation for summer, and a wonderful Christmas, without 10 different credit cards. Those days are gone, kinda of sad to me.

So you concede the point that the median income has been dropping despite the economic expansion. You may want to make it seem somewhat irrelevant of a fact but it is the best gauge I've seen to ascertain how economic prospeity is distributed. Whether you like to acknowledge it or not, the fact remains that most Americans now earn less than they did at the start of the currently ending economic expansion cycle. And the fact also is that that is a first meaning that most Americans have - prior to 2001 - shared in the economic gains of the national economy. That is no longer the case and I see that as a problem. There are simply too many - most Americans - that are getting the short end of the stick.

You don't care for Bumblefcuk, Kansas? How about Buttcrack, Alabama? I hear it's equally inexpensive there.

Some of the most valuable and desirable real estate in the country. I can't afford the armpit.

I'm from bumblefukc, KS. It's nice here. We live in a decent little house where the mortgage payment is about 15% of our monthly one-income take-home pay after health care and 401k contribution. Lot of extra money left over to travel, put toward retirement, go out, etc. I love places like California and Vegas but couldn't imagine living there due to the cost.
