My former job was testing out posture pedic matresses.

You do not get a SSN the same day you apply. Approximate and average wait time is 2 weeks. Could be longer. It depends on how long it takes Homeland Security to get back to them.

We did... it was issued on a temporary card til his real card arrived about 10 days later.

When we applied this past summer (because it obviously wasn't arriving via that box we checked) they said they now had to contact homeland security and get an approval on people to confirm the validity of the visa. They said this is normally a quick process, but could take some time if HS didn't get back to you. When did you guys get his SSN? I'm wondering if this is a new thing.

When we applied for Moh's SS# back in September they gave us a paper saying that he applied for a number but didn't give us the actual number. His SS card arrived about 1.5 wks later.

That is what they did for us and they instructed us that it is legal to present your employer with the paper to show proof of application and they would be legal to work.

We went to SS office around Jan 6 '07 or so (2 weeks after his arrival) and he was given a paper (I believe?) w/ his SSN on it and told it would be mailed w/in about 2 weeks. It came in the mail roughly 10 days later. I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure that's how it happened here.

eta: forgot to put the year
