Breast-feeding raises children's IQs, study says

I guess everyone in the past must have been smarter than us. Oh wait, that wasn't true.

Intelligence is a complicated thing. I don't think breastmilk alone has everything to do with it. Nutrition important? Sure. But all there is to it? Doubt it. It think genetics and overall environment have far more to do with it, which is why it is difficult for me to buy such claims. According to the Danish study, breastfeeding after 9 months is coorlated with a drop in IQ! OH NOZ! Despite that, I still think it is a good idea to nurse to one year regardless, if possible.

I'd guess that it's a combination of the nutrition (which cannot be matched with formula) and the bond that happens between the child and mother. A woman's body releases oxytocin into her body when she breast feeds and some of it is present in the milk. Oxytocin is linked to mental alertness and can alleviate postpartum depression. There's a lot more going on than just the providing nutrition for the baby.

Maybe. Breastfeeding also can just as easily be problematic, painful, and stressful for the mother causing feelings of resentment and low self-worth contributing to post-partum depression.

That's what bothers me about all the 'fuss' regarding breast feeding.

Some women simply don't make enough milk. There's such a push to breast feed these days that a woman can end up feeling like a bad mother if she isn't able to do it.

Then there's women like me who didn't WANT to do it. I only had six weeks maternity leave before returning to work and I couldn't imagine the impracticality of working and breast feeding. I got grief about it at the hospital from a couple of the nurses in the ward. It was my business, my body, my child and my life - not theirs. Do-gooders really need to mind their own business when it comes to personal choice.

Steven, you read to much.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Actually there COULD be something going on there!

A baby's immune system strengthens dramatically with breastfeeding. The immune system helps in brain development up until the blood-brain-barrier is nearly sealed off and brain white cells can pick up the tab... Think of it as a rise to normalcy in these babies, not necessarily a rise above the average IQ. With a stronger immune system you also reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases down the road, with some repercussions to brain structures in some cases... but yeah, definitely its a matter of choice.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Breast feeding became 'en vogue' about 30 years ago.

We all know it has benefits. I think it's beyond silly to now propogate the notion it adds to intelligence. That's like saying flip-flops contribute to better posture.

We're only beginning to discover the chemical reactions and chemistry of the human body. I don't think a mother should feel guilty or ashamed if she didn't breastfeed, anymore than a parent who discovers the enormous benefit to reading to her child everyday, but hasn't. Every mother has to decide what works for her and her child, but I would hope the choice to breastfeed or not goes deeper than just a personal preference. :)

I do beg to differ for the reasons I stated above RJ. I'm thinking that there could be a connection as in development most systems are actively crosstalking.

There are alternatives, though, that can make up for any possible defficiencies that *may* arise from a lack of breastfeeding. A healthy diet comes to mind, as well as plenty of cognitive stimulation.

Also, I do think that breastfed babies develop a stronger connection (consider it making it easier to bond with others and hence) to their mums, resulting in a faster ability to assimilate foreign stimuli. Of course, like I said, there would be very probable alternatives.

I really think there is much to be discovered with the oxytocin that a woman's body releases when she breastfeeds. Nature is an amazing mechanism.

Just imagine... oxytocin is actually released by both genders when involved in... all kinds of activities... he he he he...

I agree. I can provide the EEG materials as well as do some of the blood sampling for oxytocin levels, etc... But we'll have to have a set up so that we can sample within a set amount of time post "experimentation"

Isn't science great??

of course, we'll need plenty of test subjects and controls. where's almaty?

The title of the published paper... could go something like

"Neurophysiological effects of elevated hormone levels in adult cohort: contact stimulation"

And of course there'd be a follow up study with more real-time analysis using fMRI machines to show BOLDactivation of certain areas of the brain...
