Steve, have you got enough carbon credits saved up to be running that thing?

That's not bad for the price, but I need something with more memory and a decent graphics card.

Nice deal from Staples... BUT... I wouldn't be caught dead with a Compaq.

I am teetering on getting a Mac but am still afraid of getting too hooked on the whole Apple craze.

Too bad you're not here in Chicago. Got friends at the City.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Maybe I can haggle? :P There's a Gateway that has pretty much the same specs, but less ports. I prefer to work with dual screens.

Retailers are extremely hard to negotiate with on tech products. Most of them take a loss on each computer they sell due to the promotions they put forth. If you were in the market for a much larger purchase pack... then your bargaining power could save you up to 30% on the entire bit... just beware with prices this summer as they are bound to increase a LOT.

Sure. I'm planning on making a purchase within the week.

I've been relatively happy with my HP; it's the 17'' version of what you have. (Don't get 17'' if you plan to carry it around a lot.)

Good to hear that. I'm looking at Costco online and it seems like the Dell laptops are quite a bit more in price than HP. I currently have a Dell ...paid about 2g's for it 8 yrs. ago, but if I can get into something much more powerful for a 1/3 the cost without compromising quality, then I'll go for it.

Dell usually has tons of discount codes and coupons that you can use.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Which one did you end up getting (brand, specs)? Where did you purchase it from (in person, online)? Any issues?

HP Pavilion dv6700t from HP Direct

- Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)

- Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.50 GHz, 6 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)

- 15.4" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

- 4GB DDR2 System Memory

- 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

- HP Imprint Finish (Influx) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone

- Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth

- 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

- 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Quite a fast machine for a laptop.

What do you think about this one?

Someone I know works for Intel...says their chips run cooler than AMD's - less energy.
