Our dryer bit the dust this past week. It will cost as much to fix it as to buy a new one, or so I'm told. Besides, it was used when I got it. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm not opposed to using a clothesline either, I just don't have one up and I live in a rental. So...if anyone can help?

Karen,

Have you got a Mazer's Outlet nearby? We have one here in Alabama and they buy up surplus or from companies going out of business. You could check into that.

Newspaper ads from persons moving sometimes have deals but they want you to buy both.

I love my Whirlpool set and this is my second set and they are good quality. I got my from Lowe's a few years back.

Good luck.

Mary

Gosh. It was expensive, but I love my Maytag Neptune. It has a wrinkle release function that I just love. And it lowered my electric bill a TON. New dryers are so much more energy efficient than the old you just chucked. You're probably gonna be so very pleased whatever you choose.

I bought a new washer/dryer pair about 8 years ago when the washer started to croak - they were both so old. Whatever happens the next time, I can tell you that I will never have another top-loading washing machine. Front loaders use less water and get clothes sooooo much cleaner.

At the time I got mine, the Maytag Neptune was about the only front loader on the market. Now there are many others available and I think you can get other brands for a whole lot less than I paid.

Thanks Mary and Becca....I havent had to look for a major appliance in a while and had no idea what to look for. Never thought about a front loading washer. I'm wondering if maybe I should look for a combo deal now...the washer is just as old as the dryer. Sigh....

Now, to get rid of this mouse that has invaded our house! The nasty #######!

My ex hubby used to fix washers and dryers. He said they are mostly all alike these days as far as how they work; its just that they are all assembled and packaged differently. He recommended just a standard dryer, like something you could buy at Sears or Home Depot. Remember that the more complicated the machine, the more expensive they are to fix.

I have an Amana washer and dryer that I love, but he said they are a pain to work on. Wish I had known him before I bought them...!

Check the paper for moving sales...many times ppl will leave an apt for a house, and not want to take their stackable w/d with them cos now they have room for the bigger stuff. Most times they let it go cheap cos they don't wanna lug it, lol. check your paper, pennysaver, etc...

Or just wait til one of those '2years no payment no interest' jobbers & charge it! :)

You might try www.freecycle.org it is an online community of people who give all kinds of stuff away because they don't want to throw it away. When you log on just look for your local area.

Good luck.

Hey Karen,

Mine bit the dust a few months ago too. I acutally found a used one on our local swap meet site. I picked it up and switched the electric plug on it and put it in by myself. So far so good and it was only $50 bucks. I figure for that if it last me a while I at least got my money out of it. It stinks when your poor.

Good luck

Vicky
