I'll kick it off with 'To kill a Mockingbird' - a great book and a great film.

One that note, Simon Birch was a horrible movie, but the Irving book it was based on, "A Prayer for Owen Meany", is one of my favorites.

That's a great book - after 'Garp', I'd say it's my favourite Irving. Haven't seen the film, tho.

The (Original) Shining. Good movie adaptation of one of King's stodgy page-turners.

The Hitchcock 39 Steps is good - despite Hitchcock never having actually read the Buchan book. Other than the basic premise its actually quite a bit different.

The only Stephen King book I've read was his collection of short stories last year - 1408. Considering how famed he is as an author, I was surprised that he don't write so good. The film (1408) was pretty bad too.

I think King is generally overrated - though I've not read any of his full length novels. From what I've heard the anti-climatic endings of the movie adaptations of his work are pretty much the same in his books too. In fact, most of the Stephen King movie adaptations I've seen have been pretty bad.

He also seems to have a thing for stereotypical characters. I rented The Mist the other week - thought the monsters were the best thing in it but the movie itself was genera. The raving-lunatic Christian fundamentalist lady... not so much....

I agree though - 1408 was a bad, bad movie - though I wonder if that was more due to it being based on a short story. You have to add a lot of padding to make a two hour movie out of that...

BTW - I did like the Nightmares and Dreamscapes series that aired in 2006, I'd recommend that. Basically King's short stories adapted into 1 hour episodes. The first episode with William Hurt was the best though - with the army of animated toy soldiers trying to kill him.

'Catch 22'. It's a difficult book to follow along, but it works. I really enjoyed it. The film, as a recall, was just a mess, tho.

lord of the rings....good read and good films

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I'm not as keen on the book today as I was when I was a kid, but it took me several attempts to get through that hideous, 100 page long Treebeard chapter.

I liked The Hobbit, but couldn't get into LOTR. Too much, "Sing us another long, boring, three page song, Frodo" for me.

i agree...the book was a drag in parts and the ending in the shrine was unnecessary
