I'd say it's a big misconception to think that MENA couples have some sort of 'exclusivity' with this problem.

USC's by and large think the entire world wants to move here. My husband is from Western Europe - Northern Ireland to be exact. Most people I meet haven't a clue they have a better health care system than we do; a better welfare system than we do; that they have as good or better economy than the US; and that their political system isn't unlike ours.

In our case, I got some heat about the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the possibility of my husband having a terrorist background. This was especially alluded to when his namecheck went on for an extended time.

Because of our countries current political stance in the world, MENA couples may get more questions than other couples. But the rest of us aren't exempt from the bigotry. Most USC's are unable to think beyond the pale of their childhood brainwashing to our country as the leader of the free world. They just think the whole world would rather live here than wherever else they had the 'misfortune' to be born.

I think you are right and the male counterpart would be if his SO came from Russia, the Philippines, Thailand, etc. - given that there have been some cases of fraud where the male USC was taken for a ride by the foreign spouse I wonder if they get these warnings too?

Oh yes, they certainly do. Visit those forums and do some reading if you'd like to see for yourself.

very true. it makes me very angry that americans generally think that everyone wants to live here. i was in a class during my senior year of college, a political philosophy course nonetheless, when our teacher announced to the class that she wasnt a USC, and there were actually some people in the class who were giggling at this concept. like they didnt understand that she probably doesnt want to become a citizen, otherwise she would be. ew, it just kinda made me sick and i wanted to ask them what was so funny about that statement??? did they think she was illegaly here or something??? as if she could be a professor and be out of status  i am especially offended by this thinking because i hope to one day make a life for my family in europe, and i would rather live there than here. there are other reasons for living here at the moment, and having my fiance come here, but i hope to make a permanent life elsewhere.

It does-- and often it's a matter of just replacing "money" or some other item or desirable with "greencard." If you see a young arab guy and an older american woman and they are petitioning for a visa, automatic response by many is Greencard! If you see an older American woman and a younger American guy, most people think "She has to have money!" or something else.

Because it's true? When you see a 20-year-old girl with a wrinkled old raisin, what do you think,

it's "true love"? Give me a break.

This is actually a fair point. VJ is full of age-inappropriate relationships.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

What is age-inappropriate?

Both under 18?

One spouse under 16?

Big age-gap? What age gap is appropriate & what's not?

It's like porn, you know it when you see it. It's a relationship that makes you cringe, makes your skin crawl...
