I probably shouldn't say this out loud, but I got a suit (pant, jacket, shirt, belt, tie and shoes) for $400 back in 1999 and that is still the only suit I wear. I've never bought another one. It looks fine.

I'm ok with expensive purses and shoes. I've found that paying more for something up front is actually cheaper in the long run. They tend to last quite a bit longer. I have a wallet that I got for $350 in 2004 and it still looks brand new.

As I said before, there comes a point when you're not paying for increased quality anymore, only for the brand. $350 for a wallet is reasonable, like you said it lasts a long time. $35,000 for a wallet would be unreasonable.

I wouldn't pay $35,000 for a wallet! I'm sure my sister would if she had 35k

 I think a lot of men look sexy in suits so wear it to the VJ meetup so I can let you know what I think

Ok, it's cheap. Now the question is, are you lying or does it really smell?

I haven't had that said to me yet, but I don't think anyone should get upset over that it's just people thinking outloud to you about how they'd feel if they were in your shoes. The only reason someone would calmly explain why they felt that is because they cared about you and love is blind ALWAYS. Everyday people and you yourself will see women/men getting used for greencards with ruined lives and people immigrating here illegally bringing our economy down. Then again you have those wierd losers who are - jealous.

LOL - I joke about the $5 purses I pick up in Kathmandu but it's a $1600 r/t ticket to get there so I guess it's really a $1605 purse.

I've never been to a job interview wearing that suit and not got an offer. Ever.

That suit is freakin' lucky.

I think almost everyone hears that from at least one person at some point.

 Imagine that.

For the most part I would have to agree with Julianna, it appears that folks, at the least, introduce the idea as a hypothetical situation (if not flat out). There will always be pessimist and cynical folks. That's the way of the world. As previously stated, it's your life and sometimes you have to remind people of that fact. This is a huge step in your life, and therefore consider reminding them that you need their support (even if they do not agree).

I know plenty of people that have the money to buy those sorts of things, but realize that they are merely status symbols and it is not obligatory to spend in direct proportion to your income in order to ensure quality.

Agreed, although I doubt they do it because those things are boring or the food is not that great.

Ooooh. Watch that, Mark. Your conformity is showing.

Her class envy and racial hatred are showing.

Why is it assumed that because someone doesn't want to spend $5 for coffee or a small fortune on designer outfits that they are envious? Perhaps some of us see it as stupid when we can find what makes us happy for a lot less money. My personal opinion is that if someone judges their self value by having this things have some serious self esteem issues. Mind you I am not talking about those that truly enjoy these things, we are all entitled to our luxuries that make us happy, but rather those that place their own value on it.

My niece loves to dress up in her finest clothes and go to her parents to play games while drinking wine. Can I afford to do that? Of course! Do I want to? Oh He!! no!! Casual and comfortable all the way for me baby!!

It is true, sometimes I do wish I had more money for serious things, a little more security, but honestly I don't find most expensive designer clothing and other 'extras' attractive - I truly prefer my $25-50 salwar kameez which I buy in Kathmandu or Jackson Heights. If I were making that 6-figure salary I would still be wearing them. Of course that is a personal preference, to each his/her own and I do have other luxuries(on a smaller scale) that other people might not find appealing. My point was that I don't feel like my life is so difficult under $50K in NYC, even when I was living in Manhattan - if I was raising a family of course my tune would probably be much different.

Dolma, where in Italy were you? What was your job?

I was living in la bella Venezia, my dream city at the time - after I got my first Master's I just saved up $3500 and took off. I was actually an illegal immigrant though I never actually overstayed my visa - this was pre-EU so it was possible to do visa runs. I taught English under the table at several different language schools in the area, did a little translation and interpreting as well since I speak Italian - good times.... :)

The 'class envy' card is one of the reasons for the 'azzhole' stereotype.

Perhaps some of us see it as stupid when we can find what makes us happy for a lot less money.

If you have the money to buy expensive things, but you prefer not to because you think it's stupid, fair enough!

However, if you don't have the money to buy those things, saying that "it's stupid" is class envy in its purest form.

Funny....all I ever hear from you is blah blah blah blah...............

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'
