I know plenty of people that have the money to buy those sorts of things, but realize that they are merely status symbols and it is not obligatory to spend in direct proportion to your income in order to ensure quality.

Agreed, although I doubt they do it because those things are boring or the food is not that great.

Ooooh. Watch that, Mark. Your conformity is showing.

Her class envy and racial hatred are showing.

Why is it assumed that because someone doesn't want to spend $5 for coffee or a small fortune on designer outfits that they are envious? Perhaps some of us see it as stupid when we can find what makes us happy for a lot less money. My personal opinion is that if someone judges their self value by having this things have some serious self esteem issues. Mind you I am not talking about those that truly enjoy these things, we are all entitled to our luxuries that make us happy, but rather those that place their own value on it.

My niece loves to dress up in her finest clothes and go to her parents to play games while drinking wine. Can I afford to do that? Of course! Do I want to? Oh He!! no!! Casual and comfortable all the way for me baby!!

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

I agree with you sister. I could spend my money on lattes, but I have other priorities.

I value people by their actions and thoughts, not through their income (or lack of or low income). But that's just me.

If you have the money to buy expensive things, but you prefer not to because you think it's stupid, fair enough!

However, if you don't have the money to buy those things, saying that "it's stupid" is class envy in its purest form.

Ok I know the topic kinda swayed into how expensive it is to live in NYC for some reason but I wanted to comment on what the topic was originally about:

Yes, I used to hear that all the time as well in my first marriage to a Romanian, that he was using me for a green card. I lost a lot of friends and it caused strife in my family. Imagine how embarrassed I was when it turned out they were right.

What really bothers me now is, when I fessed up that I was then dating someone new who also wasn't American I got quite a lot of flack until they asked what country my now husband's from. As soon as they heard England, most asked if he had a single friend or relative they could hook up with

Life long Texan, living in Hull, UK. How did this happen?

11 January - We met online and became friends

4 February - Became a couple

17 March - I went to Hull to meet the guy

20 March - First "I love you"

25 March - I go home :(

16 November - He comes to visit me in Texas

25 November - he leaves back home :(

14 December - ENGAGED! <3

1 March- I fly off to see my babe in Hull

4 April - I go home :(

9 October - He comes back to Texas!!!!

13 October - WEDDING!!!

22 October - He goes back to England and I continue to wait for my settlement visa.

13 December 2007 - Move to England

Now the wait begins, I will become a citizen then we will DFC back to the US.

I envy the rich (people who have more than me) and I despise the poor (people who have less than me). I guess that means the only person I don't either envy or despise.... is me.

LOL

I can't afford a 3 million dollar apartment, but I don't go around telling people that

"3 million dollar apartments are stupid". And I don't hate those who can afford them.

Buying this for 40K is STUPID. And, no, I can't afford it.

I don't "hate" people who buy this sort of thing. But I seriously question their sanity.

LOL! That's good Len.

I also wondered about the $20k gold sandals Marc Anthony gave Jennifer López. I don't even know what they look like but daaaaaaaaaaaang, $20k for some flip flops?! :o

I need that for my downpayment on a house. <_<

I'm ok with expensive purses and shoes. I've found that paying more for something up front is actually cheaper in the long run. They tend to last quite a bit longer. I have a wallet that I got for $350 in 2004 and it still looks brand new.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

As I said before, there comes a point when you're not paying for increased quality anymore, only for the brand. $350 for a wallet is reasonable, like you said it lasts a long time. $35,000 for a wallet would be unreasonable.
