Royce knew that his was meager paycheck from the Pegasus hotel was in no way enough to compensate for what he lacked inside his pants. He knew that he would have to get a hustle – a side gig, to continue to compete with Pree. Pree had no problem using whatever tools he had to get whatever he wanted from anyone. He would use money, cars, and gifts from his other women to woo his newest conquests. Pree also knew how to keep Royce forgiving and loyal. On so many occasions, Royce had vowed to never associate with Pree again. He managed to stick to his guns for a short while, and Pree would inevitably bring up the past. Royce’s past was like salt in an open wound, he would do whatever he had to do to take the sting out.

Royce stared at his cell phone again, willing himself to grow enough balls to challenge both Maureen and Pree. He wished that he could find the courage to go and confront the two people that claimed to love him the most. But, what would he say? How could he convince Maureen that he was indeed the better man? Royce sighed, and realized that no matter what he tried, he would always be the homeless boy asking for handouts.

Tears of frustration, loneliness and heartache soaked his white uniform shirt, and the t-shirt underneath.

Sand mites and fleas nipped at Maureen’s exposed flesh as the sun died once more over the horizon. She exhaled harshly as the weight of her fate hung heavy on her shoulders. She could feel the mammoth weight of her life choices bearing down on her like a freight train.

Maureen had been dating Pree for four years now, and stringing Royce along for just as many years. She didn’t want to be another woman that abandoned him; she hated the fact that she no longer loved or desired him. Pree came in and totally captured her heart and her senses. In reality, he was the reason she decided to work as a go-go dancer in the first place. He was also the reason she was a month away from an interview at the Kingston Embassy to be with her “rich, White fiancé”. Pree convinced her that her big break would happen in one of those clubs. He convinced her that by marrying a foreigner; she would be able to file for him to come abroad within a year or two.

Maureen quickly discovered that her huge success on her first night out as a dancer was a fluke, a rare moment of beginners’ luck. She hadn’t really paid much attention to the aging White man that continued to stuff money into her g-string and garter belt because she was too enraptured with her thoughts of Pree. On her sixth night at the club, she noticed that her wages were drastically smaller. She racked her brain trying to recall what she had done differently. Her dance routine was more fluid, more controlled, and she even managed to find a way to tell a story with her body – a story of seduction. The crowd seemed to love her, but it didn’t make sense that the money didn’t reflect their love. She combed the dirty floor with her eyes trying to see if she lost some of her loot coming into the dressing room. Maureen even retraced her steps from the dressing room to the small stage. She glanced out at the crowd, lost in thought, and then she noticed the difference. The White American male that had become her “regular” was no longer seated in his customary seat. Had he simply left for the night after her last set? Was he the source behind the $500 bills tucked neatly against her sweaty body each night? Would he come back?

An older woman noticed her disheartened state, and took pity on her by asking what was wrong. Maureen explained her dilemma on the brink of tears. The woman attempted to mask her amusement, and explained the “tricks of their trade.”

“Mi gyal, yuh nuh heasy atall yuh knoa! Eh-eh. Why yuh try fe dance inna big ooman slippa an yuh nuh learn fe crawl? Nuff big ooman kill fe de chance tuh hentertain a baller frum farrin, I miself hincluded. Cha! Yuh nuh knoa de man check yuh fe mek im trip tuh paradise hexciting and memorable? Kiss mi neck back! Pickney gyal gwaan like she mad! Wooooiiiieee!!!” the older dancer exclaimed loudly.

“Beg yuh pardon Ma’am. Mi mummie neva raise ah skettel” Maureen replied, timid pride resonating through the small dressing room. “Mi ongly do ah ting fe get mi big break as a moggle. Mi man tell mi sey ie will ongly tek tree month time.”

“Eeehhnnn?! Really now! Gwaan tru mi gyal.” Ruth admonished. “Nuh sar. Yuh need fe wake up likkle pickney gyal. De men whaa come fe see yuh nuh beg a friend. Yuh still fresh. Mi ago mek yuh gwaan fe a minute ennoh. Cha! Moggle inna tree month time, eh? Wooooiiieee mi belly!”

That night, Pree was on time, casually leaning against his car with a small bouquet of fresh picked flowers. He smiled brightly as she exited the club. Maureen perked up at the sight of her man in a good mood.

Pree said, “Whaa gwaan babes?”

“Mi dere yere baby. Mi miss yuh ennoh.” Maureen whispered as Pree wrapped her in his embrace.

“Why yuh face mash hup so?” Pree pulled back and looked down on his woman.

“Baby, nutten nuh gwaan tonight. Mi do a ting same wey still an mi ongly mek tree hundred.”

“Bumboclat! Ah lie! Tree hundred US or pounds? Whaa mi fe do wid dat likkle sumting?” Pree roared.

Maureen flinched intuitively as anger recomposed Pree’s handsome features. Pree kiss his teeth, and moved around to the driver’s side of the car. He gunned the engine, suddenly impatient and unwilling to wait for Maureen to enter the car. The couple rode in silence, one silenced by fear, the other by indignation.

Pree parked the car in his carport, and exited the car abruptly. Maureen sat stunned and hurt by his sudden mood swing. She slowly got out the car and walked to his front door, which to her surprise was locked. Maureen knocked apprehensively.

Pree snatched the door open. “Whaa mek?”

“Eh? Yuh nuh heasy ennoh! Yuh gwaan like yuh mad tuh rass! Mi money ah fe mi frum mi bawn. Yuh neva dere yere. Why yuh lack de bumboclat door star?” Maureen shrieked.

Maureen never saw it coming as it was the first time a man had ever struck her. Pree put all his weight and brute force behind the backhanded slap across her cheek. Immediately, Maureen’s right eye began swelling shut. Tears leapt to her eyes, and cascaded over her eyelids and down her face. Maureen’s jaw wouldn’t move. Pree grabbed her by her hair, and dragged her into his home. He smacked her again in her mouth.

“Bumboclat pussyhole…nuh fix hup yuh mouth fe cuss mi inna dis life or de next star! Mi hown yuh, and mi ago show yuh ow yuh fe hearn mi money skettel!” Pree muttered as he slung Maureen across the small bed.

Maureen wailed and try to escape further punishment by crawling away from him and curling into fetal position. Pree grabbed her ankles roughly and told her not to move. He hurriedly unzipped his jeans, and ripped at Maureen’s tiny g-string.
