If Pree grew tired of their “closeness”, he would withdraw suddenly – leaving only a vague memory of him in his wake. In turn, Maureen became increasingly despondent and needy. She only woke each morning to please him, or find ways to win him back.

Maureen needed to hear a loving voice, so she called Royce – still carefully watching the road.

Royce my yute leave har rass...a bun she a gi yuh bun

Royce Morgan was a small man in height and stature. His youthful looks often had strangers mistaking him for a teenage boy. He couldn’t count the number of times women had discounted him simply because he looked too young to be involved in “big people ting.” He wore his hair in cornrows that Maureen kept neat and tidy on a weekly basis. Royce had tried unsuccessfully to grow a beard and mustache, which continued to grow sporadically in different areas of his face. His body was slim and tight, with slender muscles defining his arms, chest, stomach and legs. Hell they should be, he labored at keeping his physique. In his mind, it was the only thing that would possibly keep Maureen coming home.

Royce looked at the now idle cell phone. He knew that Maureen was seeing his best friend. He wished he knew what to do to stop their union. Royce had been down this road countless times before with Pree, but he didn’t have a clue how to stop allowing Pree to step all over him. The simple fact was that Pree was the only family Royce had. Royce’s father had been killed in a horrible car accident when Royce was eight years old. His mother had been approved for a work program in the U.K. some years before, and her erratic visits stopped completely after the accident.

For some time after the car accident, Royce had been raised by different people in his small community. However, they too had grown weary of the strain and toil of raising a stranger – often stretching what small food rations they had to accommodate his cravenous stomach.

At around 10 years of age, Royce found himself shunned and alone. The schoolteacher, Mrs. Patton, allowed him to continue his studies for as long as she could. Unfortunately, Royce was forced to drop out of school at the tender age of 12.

Pree had been the only child to befriend Royce during those difficult years. Royce had done all he could to maintain his appearance and cleanliness, but it had been difficult with no real means of obtaining new clothes, soap, toothpaste and deodorant. Pree had ignored Royce’s often disheveled appearance, and the cruel taunts of the other school age children.

They boys shared lunch, marbles, their dreams, hopes and disappointments. Pree had even managed to convince his mom to let Royce stay with them in their tiny home, until she lost her job as a housekeeper. By that time, Pree was indebted to Royce and very loyal.

Royce was ashamed of some of things he had done as a teenager in order to survive. He felt that he had lowered his own self-worth by begging for food and money, from locals and tourists alike. He had even began “borrowing” things to eat from local markets and stores, convincing himself that he would one day make good on his debt. The only thing Royce had not done, but he felt was becoming increasingly difficult to avoid, was engaging in sex with tourists for money. He was becoming more enthralled by the tales of his co-workers that had worked in different hotels across the small island, now that he worked as a bartender. His co-workers from the Negril area had the most amazing stories about all types of women. Some of them had even been abroad to the US, the UK and Canada.

Money was tight as a bartender. Royce worked long hours, and had little to show for it. Maureen complained constantly about his lack of money, and his low interest in sex. In all honesty, Royce loved sex as much as the next man, but he was ashamed of his own girth. Like the rest of him, his manhood was short and slender. When he first met Maureen, she had told him that he was the perfect fit for her – of course, Royce was her first lover. She had been right; her body fit his like a glove. Royce knew instinctively when she had allowed another man to place his mark on her, and that same night his suspicions had been confirmed. Maureen hesitantly allowed Royce to make love to her, and her otherwise ardent responses, were cool and mechanical. He had been devastated, despite his best efforts to remain aloof. After all, he was very familiar with rejection from women.
