I have filed my I-751 and still waiting for my 10 yr GC. However I have to travel to Canada in next couple of weeks. I know that with valid green card, I do not need to apply for Canadian visa. Since my GC is "expired" as far as Canadian authorities are concerned, do I need to apply for visa for Canada before I travel? Or does Canada accept the extension letter as valid GC and will let me in? Has anyone traveled to Canada with expired GC before? Any input is greatly appreciated.

If someone from India needs a visa to travel to Canada, you will need a visa to travel to Canada, since you are travelling on an Indian passport and not one from the US.

If not, travelling to Canada with your passport from your home country will suffice.

You need your expired GC and the extension letter when you re-enter the US, and yes, the officers at the POE's in the airports are used to dealing with extension letters.

With your Indian passport, you don't need a Canadian visa to visit.

Look at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp

Normally, an Indian citizen needs a visa but you ar exempt because they state "persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence".

Sounds like you'll be OK with just your extension letter and the orginial expired green card with you.

I would call Canadian consulate. I know some other countries (like Switzerland, for example) exempting US GC holders from visa requirements. But you need to have plastic GC with magentic stripe to cross border-they do not accept other proof of permanent residency. Looks like Canada accept more evidence. I would just call and check what they accept.

Permanent U.S. residents don't need a visa to travel to Canada, regardless of their country of origin. :)

It is true for anyone who is a lawful US Permanent Resident regardless of what that person's current nationality is. So yes, the extension letter and original expired green card will be good enough for a US Permanent Resident to travel to Canada.

I spoke with Canadian Consulate today. She told me I should not have any problem entering Canada as long as the NOA reciept says that my application is in process. She was more concerned about me being able to enter US again using extension NOA. I travel next week and hopefully I will recieve my 10 yr GC before that and will not have to worry about all this.
