Probably a silly question, but travel insurance...

I'm leaving the UK on 12th May to enter on K1. Is it worth me buying any travel insurance, in the event that i'm injured during the first little while whilst in the US? Clearly I need to sort out health insurance once in the US, but is it worth it, or even legal, to buy, say, 90 day's worth of tourist's travel insurance to cover me in the event of illness or injury recently after arriving in the US?

Did other people buy insurance with their flight, or not bother? What can I do to cover myself before getting US health insurance?

we have been wondering the same thing we also looked at coverage for up to 11 months with renewable ability its very expensive but then we think ok it could be even worse if we dont have the insurance for him and he should God forbid get in an accident or get sick and need hospital...........so i will be checking to see what others say about this we are undecided on it........

You can get special short-term travel insurance from the post office by calling 0800 169 999 (I made a note because someone else did this and it seemed sensible to me... I think it only covers you for a few days but is perfect for me because I'm planning on getting married very soon after my arrival). Hope that helps!

Also, I do not believe that standard travel insurance would be honoured as you are not visiting but moving.

Well quite. There was a time a few years ago when I was on holiday in New York and had to be hospitalized, and my parents had to deal with the claim back in the UK and it took FOREVER. As I wouldn't be in the UK, I'm thinking yeah, travel insurance might be a waste of time anyway.

Thanks for the number though! I'll give them a call, but I'd still appreciate any other info people might have...

That is correct.

Travel insurance is not designed for people who are moving to the country they are getting the insurance for. You'd be better off getting a short term health plan once in the USA.

I've been looking into 'one way' travel insurance companies and there are a few out there.

This company seems pretty good with reasonable rates.

Im going to call them up closer to my move. I mainly wanted insurance for my baggage (for some reason I dont have the greatest confidence in the baggage handling system at terminal 5  ) but this company also covers health etc....all the stuff you would expect from regular travel insurance, so it seems perfect.

Read the small print if your just taking out regular visitor holiday insurance, you'd need a UK home address. If something was to happen and you were to claim thro a US address, the claim would be invalid.

I've had annual multi-trip insurance through insure and go for the last few years... I still renewed it for twelve months last October because even though I knew I was leaving before the year was up, even for six months (I was making a number of trips) it was worth it; the rates are good :)

the guy I spoke to told me that my insurance will become void a day or two after entering the States, ie it's still valid for the trip from Sydney and the entry... you need something different to cover you for medical issues upon arrival, but to me it was still worth it to be covered for flights and baggage and so on :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Hehe, I used to use Insure & Go all the time. Excellent company and really good rates for general holidays and vacations etc
