Carry permit in Indiana

Does anyone on here know if you have to be a U.S. citizen to get a carry and conceal permit in Indiana. I can't find the information anywhere. Some states require you to be a citizen and other states accept a green card but I don't know about Indiana. Just wondered if anyone here knows.

I dont know the answer about it but i would think it would be very difficult even if u live in a state that allows it......im a usa citizen and it was difficult for me to get one.......also.....if u have a permit it is connected to ur drivers license at dmv so if ur ever pulled over for a simple traffic stop the office can and will in most cases act like u could be a danger to him......case in point my mom also has permit so that when we travel alone in some of the more remote parts of oregon we have some protection........she is in her late fifties was pulled over for something bad light or something i dont remember but i do remember the reaction of the officer when he ran her drivers license he came back to the car with his own weapon drawn and demanded for her to get out of the car cuffed her asked where the gun was located she didnt even have it at that time it was a mess......my advice dont do it

The record of the carry permit isn't in Oregon linked to your DMV record. However when the officer asked for your mothers details to be checked the system in the Dispatch Center checks those details against a number of databases one of which held the record of the concealed weapons permit. I spent a couple of hours at our local dispatch center at Lake Oswego and saw how those sort of things are done. If the officer hadn't even seen your mothers driving license but just run her name the same results would have come back.

As to his reaction once he knew good for him. He doesn't know if she was carrying or not or what her intentions might have been his one and only priority at that point is his own safety. It is part of the price you pay for wanting to carry a firearm.

Yeah, that's the chance you take when you have one...if you get pulled over. I've been told it's a good idea though to hand over your permit with your drivers license. The officer may still be cautious but at least he'll know you have a gun and you have it legally. There won't be any surprises.

I work in security where some of the guys have guns but I don't. So far there hasn't been anything that happened where one would need a gun though.

PS, if you move to Texas, you can not only get the CCW but they'll let you use the gun too.

The advice I was given was keep both hands on the steering wheel and say I have a concealed weapons permit and where the firearm is as soon as the officer speaks to you.

I checked with a friend of mine who is pretty up on this stuff - here is his reply

Indiana's law only prohibits the issuance of concealed carry permits to non-citizens (legally residing here, of course) if Federal law prohibits them from carrying a firearm. As far as I know, there is no such prohibition; certainly there is no such prohibition when it comes to purchasing a firearm, to include handguns, Federal or State (when purchasing a firearm, some prrof of legal residency, such as his alien number, etc. is required on the form 1044 since he will have to check the box saying he is not a citizen).

Indiana is shall-issue, so as long as he meets all of the other requirements, pays the fees, etc., he will get the permit. The permit not only permits the concealed carry of handguns, but open carry as well. I do not believe open carry is allowed for anyone without a CWP.

Armed guards get paid more than non-armed guards, generally. I'm guessing that's your motivation.

No, we're in house security at a large factory. We get paid the same, armed or unarmed.

Thank you everyone for your help. I really appreciate it. I wasn't able to find anything. All I found was where it said you had to be a U.S. citizen or be allowed under federal law to carry a gun, but I didn't know if you had to be a citizen to be allowed under federal law. Thanks again.

I had no problem with my South Carolina concealed weapons permit either. I did the course free (because the instructor offers it free to gun club members), paid $10 for the fingerprints and $50 for the permit. 3 months later my permit arrived fairly anonymously in a brown envelope with no other documentation accompanying it.

If I'd done the course at a gunshop then it'd have been more - $110 for the course and $25 for the prints plus $50 for the licence. Total $185 when I paid $65 and my normal gun club dues.
