Maiden name on old passport?

My soon-to-be wife will be moving here finally in about a week or so.

She is curious as to what kind of hassles, if any, will be caused by her only ID (her UK Passport) having her maiden name on it after we get married.

Obviously, we want to get her ID that will reflect her new status, but one thing she did wonder about was because we're planning a honeymoon trip down to Key West, and it'll be essentially right after the wedding, so...the chances of her getting any ID's in her new name prior to that are next to none.

Thanks.

Just book her plane ticket with her maiden name for now. When she changes her name on her passport, then you can book plane tickets with the married name. That is what I have done when I travel to see my husband out of the US. I have not had ANY problems.

Uh, but that's not going to work. For her to do anything to change her passport, she would have to have another ID in the first place....she's not going to be changing her UK passport, chances are that one is just going to expire and that will be that. She'll get a US one sooner or later, but again, she'll need an SSN, a government ID, etc etc.

She can carry with her a copy or the marriage certificate as a proof of name change.

I don't know if Key West is inside US, but it's outside I'm afraid that she cannot travel abroad with the K1 visa...

Good luck

So, your wife intends to be unable to do any international travel from the time her UK passport expires and the time she becomes a US Citizen? She'll just do without a passport. Not a good option for most people. She can get a new UK passport fairly easily and do it in her married name.

Is it absolutely necessary that she have ID ASAP in her married name? Is it not possible for you to book her ticket in her maiden name for the honeymoon? It is, after all, just a name on a ticket and doesn't reflect your commitment to each other.

Hmmm.. just re-read your question more fully. The answer is: minimal, if you are willing to have her book her tickets in that name until she gets a new one. Eventually, I assume, she will get a driver's licence -- this can be in her new married name and can be used, at least domestically, for travel. I myself have my passport in my old name but haven't bothered to get a new one -- it's a hassle, and I travel internationally frequently so it's not a great choice to have it away for a while. My licence is in my new name and I use that wherever I can for ID.

It's just a matter of patience, and being pragmatic here. When you say she needs another ID to change her passport, you can use the marriage certificate as proof of change. When the time comes that she feels she wants a new UK passport, have a look at this: http://www.britainusa.com/sections/article...001&a=25304 The fee is currently $265.

I believe she'll be applying for AP in case she has to go back to England anytime soon, but other than that, she has no plans to travel internationally that I know of.

I guess I can have her look into the renewal of UK Passport later, when the time comes.

As far as Key West, for anyone who doesn't already know, it's a group of atolls that are a part of the state of Florida, so there's no issue there.

AP is no good without a valid passport.

She tells me her passport is valid till 2015, and if she has the marriage certificate to explain why the name is different, that should be sufficient based on what I've read so far.

That was the key piece of missing information. In any event, she can use a US ID for domestic travel but unless you eventually change the name in her UK passport, all international travel will need to be in her maiden name unless you want to carry a marriage certificate with you all the time.

What's your problem with changing the name in her passport after you marry?

I don't have a problem with that, the only issue with it here is that there isn't going to be enough time between the day we get married (June 21) and the day we'll leave for our trip (June 25) to get that sort of stuff done and processed.

She tells me she planned to get it changed, and that's all well and good. We just wanted to make sure this wouldn't interrupt our honeymoon.

No problem with the honeymoon. Do you think other newlyweds wait to change the wife's ID before leaving on their honeymoon? Not so much.
