One Way Trips To The U.S.

Okay, while I'm here - another annoying question.

I've looked at flights to Los Angeles for when I finally can be with my loved one, but the one-way trips to LA seem to be twice the price as a return trip. Does it really matter if I book a return trip to save some money, even though I'm not coming back for some time?

well as its the airport i use you caught my eye so i tested it and was stumped when a one way ticket direct from virgin atlantic cost over £700 for 3rd may but then i did a check on ebookers for one way flight and it was just over £300 for 15th and would you beleive that the cheapest airline was virgin atlantic? i've just come bk from two weeks their and i paid £350 return for april so i guess its not too bad but still cheeky.

I'd do it. And since some tickets are refundable, you might be able to get a refund on the return portion. (Usually not though)

It's just the way tickets are priced. Sure, it's ok to buy a round trip ticket and even discard the leg not used. Make sure you buy the ticket so it's the first leg you use. If you miss the first leg, they'll cancel the whole reservation. Buy round trip TO the USA, NOT FROM the USA.

They price them that way because selling only the outbound leg usually causes them to have an empty inbound leg a lose money. The ticket reflect the full outbound price and a loss prevention cost on the return you are not taking ( and will most likely be empty )

My husband used to do that all the time. It would cost about 2/3 again more for a 6-month return and more than twice as much for a one-way, so he would buy a 45-day return and give up the second half of the ticket.
