Well, I messed up when I submitted the DS-230 form and now I am trying to fix it. I didn't submit all the supplemental documentation they asked for out of stupidity on my part. But I am having my wife gather everything now. The question I have is, "Do they need an original Police Report from Colombia or can she just send me a certified copy of the original? Does she need the Police Report for the Interview too?

Please help me if you know.

First check if your wife's local Embassy is what NVC calls "Appointment Post".

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3734.html

If it is Appointment Post, please see the documents that have to be submited with the DS 230.

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3176.html

Those documents are related to the beneficiary (the foreign spouse) in your case should be your wife, she must sign part I and leave part II to be signed at her interview, anyway both parts I and II should be sent to NVC. The certified copies must be from originals issued by the issuing authority, tell her to not go to a public notary to get certified copy, NVC does not accept them and neither will her local Consulate. In theory the originals should be returned to the beneficiary at the interview, but it happens for some people and it doesen't for others, anyway I wouldn't count on getting the originals back. I would get 2 certified copies of the originals and would send 1 to NVC and keep the second one for the interview. Send 1 original plus a photocopy of each requested document to NVC. Police Certificates must also be originals issued by the issuing authority, not a photocopy certified by a notary. Also, if she had her name changed after marriage, she should get one Police Certificate for her maiden name and another reflecting the new name.

Hope it helps.

Good Luck!

EdgarVirginia, regarding the above.. do we have to make photocopy of each original document requested and send both the set of originals with the photocopies too?

Kitty,

You must send 1 original and 1 photocopy of each document requested. You should probably have a look at the second link that EdgarVirginia posted. Choose your embassy from the drop down menu and then click on request instructions.

On the next page, click on the link for civil documents, right at the top it states you must send an original and a photocopy of each document you submit to NVC.

Exactly, thanks Trailmix.

Just reinforcing about originals and photocopies, I believe she's confused about NVC x interview.

to NVC you should send> 1 original + 1 photocopy of each document

to the interview you should take with you> 1 original of each document

Your wife has to get ALL originals and ALL originals need to be send and make sure you make a copy of all the documents...my wife had to get all originals in Peru and she send it to me by mail and I had to send it to the NVC and it was approved and they told me to make sure she takes the copies to the interview...Well good luck

I would take the safe route and would not take photocopies to the interview, take only originals. Taking photocopies to the interview might have worked to some people, but it might have been only luck, don't take that procedure as the proper procedure. The guides are clear and it says to mail originals to NVC (plus 1 photocopy of each document) and also take originals to the interview.

QUESTION: The Paris embassy is a Appointment posts so now I know I have to send NVC the police cert. birth cert. & photos, "did not know that till today" anyways, will I have to also submit another set of originals of police cert, birth cert and etc to embassy at time of interview????, cause the Vj emabsssy info. mentions these docs and a few others, so I was planning on these docs then.

We filed K3 petition, but as we all know maybe turn into a CR-1.

Paris Heart,

Yes, take a second set of originals for the interview (Marriage and Birth Certificate, Police Certificates). If you had your name changed after marriage, you should also get a police certificate for your maiden name as well as for yr new name. That's what I did.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for the information. My wife has been busy getting all the documents together and I should have them by Wednesday night. She has a second set of originals that she can take to the interview, but the Police Report she only has the one original, she is going to get a copy certified by a Notary in Bogota to take to the interview because she says she can't get a second original. I don't know how that works there but I am hoping everything will be okay and she will not need any of the documents when she goes for the Interview. The NVC stated in my phone call that they send everything to the embassy so she wouldn't need any of the documents but when I read the Embassy website it sounds like she does.

I will keep my finger crossed. Again, thank you for all the information.

Dennis
