SSN and other Questions

Hey Guys!

I just got my EAD approved and therefor I would like to apply for my SSN as soon as I receive it in the mail.

Do you guys know if they will have any issues since my I-94 is now expired? I have read they only need to see a few documents to prove the immigration status withing the country and they do mention EAD card as one of them but just want to make sure...

Also any idea of how long they will take to issue the number after applying? Do they give you a receipt with the number on it before they issue the card?

On another note my husband and I will have to get a second car since we won't be able to share the one we have right now once I start working since we will be having different schedules and what not. Any suggestions about buying a used cheap car in L.A. area? Nothing too fancy nor expensive. Bare in mind this will be my first car. Maybe it is a lame question but I was living in London and therefor never had the need to drive... I'm sure there are a lot of vehicle savvys on this forum ;)

Thanks so much guys!

If you entered on a K1 and your I 94 is expired, then yes - you will have to use your EAD card to get the SSN.

Times vary - some get the number in a week, some take a few weeks. Just apply and see what happens.

Thanks for the prompt reply. However I was asking if I would have problems applying with the EAD card which has just been approved ;)

You shouldn't - just have your passport with the K1 and expired I 94 with you. They'll need to determine your basis for applying, which would be your K1 entry and your new EAD card. Unfortunately though, a lot of SSA workers are ignorant of the rules so be prepared to explain their rules to them...! The document in my sig may help.

Thanks so much once again, however I'm adjusting status from VWP. Should that be an issue? I have all my NOA's and so far my AP and EAD have been approved.

Ah - I'm not quite as 'up' on those rules, but I do believe you're still ok with the EAD card.

However, I'll move this thread to the appropriate forum where you should get a more educated answer than mine! :)

I'm looking at the link you sent me (thanks again) and it seems the EAD will suffice. Although I'm prepared to bring more documentation with me if needed, such as the NOA's my unexpired passport and Marriage Cert. amongst others.

Thanks for the support!

Sorry if I posted the question on the wrong place, since I was also asking about cars I was unsure of where to post it to be honest ;)

Where are all the vehicle savvies out there?

That's fine - I just know that the one person I want to read this to verify what I've said (the very SSN savvy 'I Quit') reads this forum regularly. So I thought it was better suited here for that reason alone.

Do you guys know if they will have any issues since my I-94 is now expired?

As long as you can provide a valid EAD card, the fact that your I-94 is expired doesn't matter.

Also any idea of how long they will take to issue the number after applying?

If you are lucky, the day after you apply. If not it could be weeks or months. Just depends on how long it takes SSA to verify your status.

Do they give you a receipt with the number on it before they issue the card?

You should receive a notice that you have applied and can be given a receipt that the SSN will be assigned, but since the numbers are assigned from SSA Headquarters you will need to go back to the office after the application has been processed if you want something with the number on it if you don't feel like waiting for the card to arrive in the mail. Once the SSN has been assigned you can ask for an SSN Verification Printout.
