Chandler's police chief is shot. His fellow officer takes aim on the suspect and kills him.

The suspect, 34-year-old Byran Williams allegedly shot Chief Marlin Weisheit as the chief responded to a domestic dispute call at Williams' home.

Weisheit believes he's lucky to be alive.

Bryan Williams was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville Thursday.

The timing of the situation is probably the reason Weisheit is alive. It was the 7 am shift change at the Chandler Police Department.

Officer Eric Morris was getting ready to leave and Chief Weisheit about to take over, a rare moment in the day when backup is available.

Chief Weisheit says, "I was fortunate the call came in before he left cause we might not have had as good an outcome for me."

The two officers were responding to a domestic dispute call on North Illinois. The call came in as a man with a gun inside a home with his wife and two kids.

Chief Weisheit says, "All I got out was drop the gun, cause I heard him jacking the gun. I could barely see him through the door."

That's when Weisheit says Williams fired his shotgun, striking the police chief's gun and holster on his hip. It spun the chief around with his gun taking most of the impact.

Then officer Morris reportedly fired his gun at Williams and knocked him down.

Weisheit says he was able to grab the shotgun and another pistol found at the scene, "I think if Officer Morris hadn't stopped him, he could have possibly taken everyone out."

The situation was made even more difficult because of those involved.

Bryan Williams is the son of Assistant Newburgh Police Chief Tiger Williams, a close friend and political rival of Weisheit.

Tiger Williams arrived on scene to deal with the loss of his son and cope with the fact his former colleague was shot while trying to protect the Williams family.

Chief Weisheit says, "He was just glad we were ok. What do you say, the guy lost his son? Things like this aren't supposed to happen in Chandler."

Weisheit says this is the first time in his career he's had a gun fired at him, "I told everybody I was the luckiest guy in Chandler today."

Weisheit is crediting Officer Morris with saving his life. The Indiana State Police and the Warrick County Sheriff's Department will conduct and investigation.

#######? The guy who was killed is my cousin's real dad. She didn't talk to him for almost 10yrs and then a few weeks ago she started talking to him again and saw him for the first time since she was little last Friday. Please keep her in your thoughts/prayers. She is a teenager and this has hit her pretty hard.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

Wow, that's sad Amber. I will pray your cousin will be ok. At least she got a chance to talk to him again before this craziness happened.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.
