I looked up "document" on dictionary.com:

" a written or printed paper furnishing information or evidence, as a passport, deed, bill of sale, or bill of lading; a legal or official paper."

Above is the 1st definition and the one I would use. I think the key is its official or legal paper. The G-325A is not official or legal as far as I'm concerned...

But who knows what the USCIS really means when they say "document"

I really dont think you need your birth certificate (at least not for the I-130).

Answer the following question:

Is your *current* LEGAL name the same as on your marriage certificate to your current husband?

If the answer is YES, then you don't need any other supporting evidence for your names change (per MY interpretation of the instructions)....

It is 2 am here in Japan (are you here?)... so I may be getting a bit loopy.

I'm waiting for my wife to goto sleep and have nothing better to do, so let me try and make my point a little stronger.

Think about it from their stand point, you've submitted TWO official documents from government organizations. The marriage certificate and the divorce certificate. In theory your name should have been verified by the issuing agency. Why would they need to verify it again? Answer: They wouldn't, unless you are claiming your name is NOT what is listed on those document. SO, they want ANOTHER "official" document showing the name you are using now...

Make sense?

well 2 of my old names are not on the Certificate any more....its on the my mothers old family certificate( removed family register) and my old step fathers certificate(.CERTIFIED COPY OF ORIGINAL FAMILY REGISTER FOR RECREATION ).it is really complicated but..

I'm not sure how else to make what I'm saying any clearer.

The only name change document they want is for how you got your current legal name.

My wife had a previous husband and used his family name. The ONLY thing I submitted to prove that family name change was the divorce document. They approved it. My wifes current legal family name is same as mine. The ONLY think I submitted was our marriage certificate. All is good.

What you said confuses me a bit. Where did you get married?

I was married in Japan. So, when my wife changed her name she updated her family register.

If you got married in the US but didn't change your name in Japan, then I'm not sure what you should do. I think you should use your Japanese name to file the paper work. A US marriage certificate is NOT a legal name change.

Well for question 7 on the I-130 "Other Names Used (including maiden name)". We put JUST the family names.

Her birth name was Suzuki and her previous marriage was Azuma ... so we put:

Suzuki,Azuma

Not sure if it is correct format, but they approved it all the same.

How did you get both names on your passport?

My wife's passport has both names but where my name is it says that is her current name. They just didn't want to print a new passport. I think it says something like "Family name amended to".

Well your complicate dual name passport makes it really hard to know what the right thing to do is. It might be time for you to call the helpline.

If I were to take a guess. I would say that using your husbands name on the forms is ok, and that you don't need any more supporting evidence then your marriage certificate. But, just to be sure call the help line and hope they know the answer...

yeah thats what i did and the question is do I need anything to proove or to show my birth name changed and the 2nd name changed????its complicted right?
