Hi everyone,

My parents are most likely going to be my co-sponsors since I'm justing finishing up college and don't have a sufficient income. But my parents are worried about what responsiilites they have (financial) as co sponsors and do those responsibilities end once we are married and my fiancee becomes a "permanant resident"??

Any answers will be appreciated!!

The I-134 is not binding. This is what you need at the interview stage.

In order for your fiancee to become a permanent resident after you get married you are going to have to prove you can sponsor her (similar requirements to the I-134). If your parents cosponsor at that point then they will be responsible if she receives any means-tested benefit from the government (ie, they may be asked to pay the governement back).

The only way they are released from this:

(1) if the cosponsor dies

(2) if the immigrant dies

(3) immigrant becomes a USC

(4) the immigrant has been credited with 40 quarters of work

(5) immigrant leaves US and abandons residency

Worst case that can happen is that she and you can't support her and she gets money form welfare/social services etc. and then the Govt. can collect the moneys from your sponsors - it doesn't mean that they will - I have not heard of a case where they actually went after the sponsor - but the sponsor is guaranteeing that they will help the person if needed. The best scenario of course is that you do not need a penny from them - explain it to your parents to put their minds at rest. (Its not likely that they will be asked to sell their home etc. to satisfy a huge amount of debt to the govt.) Good Luck
