I've noticed people are complaining about the long wait for certificates from the registrar generals office.

I received my long form birth cert. in 15 days and marriage certificate in 5 weeks. I applied for the marriage

cert. 1 week after getting married so it wasn't even registered yet.

What I did was apply for these things thru the office of my rederal MP who's office happened to be in my home town. The co-ordinated with the provintial mp in Thunder Bay and things went quite quickly. I also

phoned the regirstrar and had to wait for 1/2 an hour to inquire about the status. They requested I fax the info again. I felt they were giving me a run around wo contact the MP's office again. I also contacted an ombudsmanby e-mail. They are very busy and didn't contact me for 2 weeks. By then I had my marriage certificate but they offered to help me with any oter problems with the reg. gen. office. They have more complaints about this office than any other.

It might work for someone else

Can you explain this to someone NOT from Canada?

I was married in Ontario Dec 30 05 and expect to receive an RFE any week now for the Marriage Cert as I filed with just the Solemnization Record (just to get things rolling, expecting the RFE about the time I could get my hands on the Marriage Cert)

I am just having so many problems in the states getting my name changed completely over w/o the certificate. Social accepted the Solemnization, DMV will not, Bank did, IRS did not,

just a pain in the booty.

I don't know what a "rederal MP" is

or "provintial mp in Thunder Bay"

I googled and found some people had sent over their applications to thunder bay long before the 12 weeks were up... was thinking about doing that.

I did find a page from googling where people had used an Ombudsman to get things cracking with their certificates but don't know how to go about it.

I really APPRECIATE further explanation on what you did. thanks.

Thanks Canuck Carrie for clearing up my spelling mistakes. I noticed them after I added the reply.

For the ombudsman I Googled ontario ombudsman and found a place to e-mail them on their site.

I sent the app. for the marriage certificate 1 week after we married thru our MP's office. Reg. Gen. office didn't like that I sent before it was registered but you really have to push these guys. When I called them they had received the licence from our minister and had our application but she wanted to know when the minister had mailed the app. Really what diff. does it make if she had allthe info infront of her. That's when I had to fax her all my info again including that info. I told her the date and time and even which mail box. That's when I thought I was getting a run around and contacted the ombudsman's office. In any case we got it in 5 weeks.

As for long form birth cert. , we did this thru the MP's office at the sme time. We asked for expidited service (extra$15.) They need proof that both certificates need to be expedited. I explained I was planning to immigrate to US and sent copies of instructions on I129F that state marr. cert is needed. Also copy from I130 inst. She asked if I had a letter from immigration and I explained I needed the cert. before I could start immigration process.

Try anything

I applied for birth certicates online just days ago. I had them in my hand in four business days. I didn't pay anything extra. Just the required $35 fee online.

Here's the link:

http://www.cbs.gov.on.ca/mcbs/english/4U4V5Z.htm

I also wasn't required to require proof for expedite etc... Online also includes a guarantee of a refund of the fee if you don't get it in the 15 days.

I applied for three of them...my children and myself. I rec'd my childrens copies in the four business days...still waiting on mine however. But the fifteen days isn't up yet!

Worked for me!

Yeah, got my husbands BC online that fast too. I wish they had that online service for marriage certificates.

I'm going to wait until they charge my credit card for the marriage cert and then start calling them. I want to have it in my hands before the RFE so I can mail it in asap.

I had applied through the mail to Thunder Bay for my birth certificate on Dec. 5, 2005. I still had not received it by Jan. 30th, 2006. I called to inquire and they told me to go in person to the office in Toronto becaue it could be another 6 weeks till I get it.

I went with a letter from my lawyer on Feb. 1 and had the certificate in my hands on Feb. 3rd.

I wasn't aware online was an option but if you are in a hurry I really recommend going to Toronto.

  • 2 weeks later...
Filed: K-1 Visa Country: Canada
Timeline

I was married in Ontario in 92, and was told that there are 2 ways to change your name, 1 is assuming your husbands name, which is 'like an alias' I was told, the 2nd was to change my name legally by filling out a form with the office of the registrar general...I ws told this was the only was to change it legally...so I complied, and ended up with a new birth certificate which reflected my new married name nee maiden name. How ridiculous!! Anyways, no big deal until I decided to revert to my maiden name following my divorce. I Paid the fee, something like $25 and waited, and waited and waited. I waited over a YEAR for my birth certificate to arrive to reflect my maiden name, so that I could apply for my passport etc, it held everything up! I applied for the name change and certificate in September 2003 and received it in October 2005 after phone call after phone call after phone call, I finally got so frustrated I wrote to the MP where I had lived when I got married/divorced, the MP where I resided at the time, the MPP, Ombudsman, Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, a few others, and finally the Prime Minister LOL. I also filled out the form on the Ministry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs website that they have for reporting bad businesses, and I reported themselves to themselves :)) Needless to say, within 2 weeks of writing to everyone...I had my new birth certificate with the name change :) Sometimes it just takes persistence!
