I think since our financial lives depend on our credit reports we should have free access to them at any time. Not just once a year. This whole thing smacks of a scam to me.

Gary - I use truecredit.com. It only costs $15 a month and they give you

an easy-to-read side-by-side comparison of all three credit reports. You have

access to your credit reports 24/7 and you can update the latest report any

time you want (well, once a day.)

They also email you if there's a change, and have a "lock" feature which

you can use to lock and unlock your report to prevent thieves from getting

credit in your name.

You also have to watch out for their credit scores. I guess there are 2 different kinds, and the loan company goes by only 1 of them. I can't for the life of me remember what the name is now.

I have used freecreditreport.com over the past several years - and since I did not order my "scores" I was never charged (and also never gave my cc number!). You can get your report of the 3 major reporting bureaus for free, just not the scores. I have had no issues with them whatsoever.

Bank use FICO for scores - there are variations of scores but all from FICO. Never heard of other ones.

Yeah, I use them also. That's how I found out about the mortgage reporting problem I had.

Hmm, didn't know about the "lock" feature. I'll take a look.

For any credit card holders out there...just remember that you are protected. Any unauthorized charge can be challenged by you - just contact your bank and tell them you wish to dispute a specific charge. If it's an ongoing charge and the company is giving you the runaround, explain this to your bank - they'll either issue you a new number and card or they'll be able to block all future charges from that company.

It is one of the key benefits of making purchases with a credit/debit card.

All three can be dealt with... but just dont buy anything. If you find something that is wrong and you cant easily disput it online... mail your dispute to them. I did that, and got rid of the inaccuracies with little difficulty.

You can start with your most recent free credit report. Dispute anything in writing and after their investigation is done they will mail you a new credit report. Just like that, you get a free credit report as often as you like.

I love their commericials with that group singing freecreditreport.com jingles. I have them saved to my youtube account.
