Thousands Expected For Immigration Rights Rally

Mayor Daley, Jesse Jackson, Saul Arellano To Give Speeches

Reporting

Joanie Lum CHICAGO (CBS) ― Thousands of people are expected downtown on Thursday for a May Day march to call attention to immigration rights.

As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, marchers are scheduled to step off toward the Loop at noon, making their way from Union Park on the Near West Side to Federal Plaza downtown.

The marchers will head east on Washington Boulevard from Ashland Avenue and turn onto Desplaines Street, where they will head south to Jackson Boulevard, then east on Jackson to Dearborn Street, where they will end at the plaza across from the Dirksen Federal Building.

Mayor Richard M. Daley and the Rev. Jesse Jackson are scheduled to speak at the rally, as is Saul Arellano, the son of Elvira Arellano, an immigrant activist who was deported to Mexico last year after holing up for several months at the Adalberto United Methodist Church on the city's West Side.

Two years ago, 300,000 marchers took over the streets of Chicago in a peaceful protest against a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would have made it illegal to hire or help undocumented immigrants. The protesters included families of all nationalities, and other similar demonstrations were held in cities nationwide.

The march took hours to complete and caused a travel inconvenience for everyone in the area.

The May Day immigration marches have become an annual tradition since then, and this year the CTA plans to reroute buses. Police will be on hand to close streets as demonstrators move about, and they urge people to go about their daily routine but be aware of traffic delays.

Police will not say how many are expected to be at the march, but they say they will move demonstrators to Grant Park if Federal Plaza gets too crowded.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You're kidding me right. What part of they are in this country illegally do they not understand.

I spoke to a good friend of mine who is a teacher the other day and she was saying how they had to setup another ESOL class. But that is not all. All of these kids in the 5th grade, basically 10 years old, where born in the United States!! Can you believe it. Born in the bloody US and don't even know how to speak English.

I heard about this on my local news as I was waking up this morning. I thought Yay! A big organized march about immigration & thought it's about time someone looked at how screwy this process is and how unfair to some people it is. Maybe someone will finally streamline this process. Then I realized these aren't "immigrants" marching ... they're ILLEGALS!! #######? I do not care, nor want congress to legalize them. I agree that they should be fined, sent home & given the opportunity to immigrate legally just like all of us. Fix THIS process!! Don't let people who skipped it and decided to just barge in suddenly just become legal with no penalties while we pay outrageous fees, wait outrageous amounts of time and wait separated (9 months so far for me) from our loved ones. I'm outraged!!

What right do they have, over anyone else, to jump the queue because they feel like it. The whole point of immigration is to give people abroad a equal and fair go. Not just Mexicans.

If the government does give them amnesty the reality is that this will push back every other visa. Just think of how long it will take to process 12,000,000 to 20,000,000 new applications. And of course, consequently every other visa's cost will jump to pay for this.

I am so sick of the federal government failing to address this issue. Immigration is a federal issue, not a state, county or city issue.

I see that as a great opportunity for the police to arrest them all. It'll be thousands less illegal immigrants to deal with.

A lovely sight that would be. I figure you'd be willing to also pay for the detention and deportation costs? :D

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
