My husband received his visa Monday (4 business days!), but didn't pick it up until yesterday. He said he didn't see anything in the paperwork about importing a car. He might have skipped right over it...or do they expect you to know?! Trial and error? Anyway, I'm hoping ya'll can help me with some last minute tips at the border.

Besides what he received in the mail regarding his immigrant visa, the compliance letter, proof of ownership and insurance on his car, list of items he is bringing, I don't know what else to bring!

I am worried that we are going to get to the border and get turned away.

I know this is probably a weekly question..but to be honest I don't have time to search! And with searching, I'm always afriad that something has changed or there is a new requirement.

Please help. Ya'll are the best! :)

sounds like you have everything you need. nothing comes from the embassy with respect to importing your car and stuff. you present it all at the border (the never asked me about what i was brining or my dogs) and they will give you a form for your car that you will present at your local DMV. make sure you get this as i didn't and i wound up having to go to the nearest airport (1.5hrs away) to get it done. probably saved me $$ in the long run as i was able to talk them into giving me the lowest value listing on it for tax purposes.

good luck and safe travels.

Hi,

Yes, as KiminON mentioned, all you need is your compliance letter. When you get to the border and tell them you are activating your visa, also tell them you are importing your car.

For the car they will ask you to fill out 2 forms, it's just basic information, the VIN number, make and model etc etc - the VIN number should be on the compliance letter for you to refer to.

Once you fill out the forms the border person will stamp them and that's it, they will give you the 2 forms and your compliance letter back.

has info on importing ur car--especially the phone #'s of each manufacturer!! Some dont charge any $$, some do!! Nissan didnt charge me anything and faxed it to me within minutes!! I ended up selling my car prior to moving

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I got my compliance letter faxed yesterday..freaking $89.25 from GM. That's ridiculous..no wonder their sells are down.

Jarett's muscle car doesn't pass the emissions requirement, but I called EPA and apparently if a vehicle is over 21 years of age it is exempt. Hallelujah! I would NOT have been happy because we would NOT be leaving in 2 days! :)

But it's all good..we're ok..I'm happy again! :)

As long as you're happy. $89.25 for a letter of compliance is crazy, that 4-cylinder Vega better be worth it. Too bad GM got rid of the Smokin' Hot Hubby discount.

LOL your caption cracked me up... big time.

If only my husband would have requested the compliance letter in person, it would have for sure been free. GM might have even paid him to grace them with his presence. hehehe

We were told that a vehicle has to be 25 years or older to be exempt. I'm once again now confused.

Ford told me I needed 2 letters and they would cost me. My mother was driving my car down so I called the local Customs office and tallked to them and he said what they are going to charge you money for the letter he said don't worry about it just produce yourself and documents (registration and such) to them and they would help me fill out the paperwork. They did and no problem, but I think that was because I was not doing the import at the border, I am sure if I was then I would have needed the letter(s). Glad to hear you got your documents, it took me like 10 mins to do the paperwork at Customs for the import.
