Siân = "Sharn" kinda, sorta. Americans always call her "Shawn". If they see the name and try to pronounce it, it's "Sigh-Ann"

Most Americans are not English fluent. Many of them take it for granted and didn't even bother with English classes in school. It does reflect back on them on how illiterate they are in the future when pronouncing accents. Back to basics!

I can pronounce that name correctly.

err...it's not English, it's Welsh...

I have to say I don't blame her. I would probably be pretty stressed about that name. It's the scientific word for yeast and is the medical diagnosis for a yeast infection.

Ouch.

Candida is just the feminine form of Candidus ('white' in Latin).

Candida (Candy) Morell was the name of the central character in

George Bernard Shaw's play Candida.

 Not that my name is unusual, but I have had friends whose names were, and they loved it when someone would say, 'oh! What a delightful name you have, so unusual!'

Ross & Rachel sounds so much better.

No one here can pronounce Mags' name properly; and in NO way can they spell it.

"mags" don't seem too hard to spell or say

In Thailand my name is unusual and most of the time people will try to say it in the way they "thought" it should be or the girly version of my name.

Anya in Thai means the enlighten one (it's the name of the first monk in Buddhism who got enligthen after hearing Buddha teaching)

but there are "Aranya" or "Anyarat" with total different meaning but more common so a lot of time people would think I write or say my name wrong or something.. and they changed it for me to either of the two more common one..

I just also realized that my name is common in Europe (diff meaning and spelling) so a lot of people think i changed my name to be more westernized and a lot of Thai people still dont think it's my real name... which is frustrating sometimes coz I have to say it's a Thai name and it's not common there too...

When socializing, stick with touching the apple before starting digging it with the mouth. Politeness, and courtesy is a skill owned by the peace abiding people. But, when people start to get bored with it, they start trouble.

There is an art to social with people other than assumption. Assumption is a risk to either make or break the tip of the iceberg.

I just read the entire topic thread.... I have an "uncommon" last name, many people think it's my first name... I don't take offense at it, so why jump at someone's most likely harmless comment?

Consolemaster, you should take your own words to heart..... (I'm implying that you are digging into Glenn's comment - by posting on here..... and assumed that he was intentionally offending you)

Just my two cents.

Somebody wanted to know my name, and told him my name. He said, "that name is not a common name, never heard of it." I then asked him for his name, he said "Glenn." I replied back, "I never heard that name before too, it's uncommon for me."

I wanted to tell this guy off for saying that my name is unfamiliar to him. Of course it isn't familiar to him because I'm Asian. He expected that my name be called something in the Western language. It offends me very much. My name is my culture. It keeps my culture intact by hearing my name.

It's very rude and wrong for that person to asked such a selfish question. If he was in Asia and said his name was "Glenn" I betcha he would have gotten a glimpse of "never heard of that too" by the locals. What a moron.

Because of having trouble in pronouncing my name a "lady" "changed" my name from ALIONA to Mary. Now how f**d up can it be?
