It took my Filipina wife and I almost 4 years to get her here to Texas. When my wife went to the consuler in Manala HE changed her K-3 to a IR1. He told her that because it took so long to get to that point that he would change it himself. When she got here she was told by the people that checked her packet when she arrived in the US airport that she would get her Green Card automatically and soon. How long wil it really take? I have looked and tried calling someone to find out the real times of getting the card. Also I have also applied for the SSN on her DS-230 Part II form that was sent in. Is this the right process for that? To me it seems vague and needs more of my attention. Seems to easy for this. lol. Nothing is this easy. HELP... She wants to work, get a drivers license and her green card. She arrived March 20, she is very dissatisfied with the whole process.

It took this long because of the good old IRS. Someone there didnt believe that we were really married....hmmmm go figure.

My wife's green card arrived 4 weeks after her entry. The SS card had not yet arrived so we went to local SS office with the green card and our marriage certificate. For some reason, no SSN for her was being processed even though we had cheked the space on the DS-230. Once her number was entered into the SS computer, the officer said all the info was there and told her the process was started and she should receive the card in 7-10 business days.

She should have gotten an I-551 stamp in her passport when she was processed at the POE. With that stamp your wife can go get her SSN, get a DL and work. No need to wait for the actual green card to arrive.

I got on the net and looked very deep into the stamp you told me about. It, the net, said that for the most part it was phased out and is not really used anymore. It was phased out in 2004 or 2005, so the net states. I wish to God that it was still in use and that it was that easy to get her cards and all issues such as working and a divers license. Any more light on this subject is very much needed...HELP.

Is there an I-551 stamp in her passport or not?

Yes, actually I had her scan and send me the visa and YES there is a I-551 on it. It said that its good for 1 year. Its not a stamp, its printed at the bottom of it like this print here. She had to go back to the Pi for some business and she will be back on the 14th. I want her to get a DL and work. She has been so excited about getting work here. The I-551 was new news to me, I had never heard of it before. Does the DL people and a future employer know about this stamp? Is there something that I can print out and have her show to a prospective employer? YOu have been a GIANT help everyone. This site is fantastic and so are all the people in it. THANKS SO MUCH

The green card will probably come in the mail by the time she gets back. That an SS card is all any employer will need to see.
