Senator McCain proposes giving each family $5,000 to buy their own health insurance

Of course, let's not forget that our Congressional Democrats are telling us that universal health coverage is basically a pipe dream, no matter what their own Presidential candidates say....

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York: “Health care I feel strongly about, but I am not sure that we’re ready for a major national health care plan.†Schumer said he’d focus “on prevention above all and cost cutting until we can get a national health care plan.â€

Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia: “We all know there is not enough money to do all this stuff,†he said. “What they are doing is … laying out their ambitions.â€

Rep. Kendrick Meek of Florida: “I hear on the campaign trail, ‘This is what I’m going to do,’ as if there is not a Congress here with feelings and experience on this issue,†Meek said. “I think it’s important that everyone takes that into consideration and that this is not a kingdom, this is a democracy.†Meek added that “the money is not necessarily there right now†and said calls to end the Iraq war would likely take up a lot of Washington’s bandwidth. He called the health proposals “a really good start.â€

I don't think anybody is going to be able to push healthcare reform on a national level without it becomming some kind of corporate welfare like medicare part D. Thats the case right now, but it could change in the future.

The real movement will come from states. But it will likely being uneven. The wealthier states will have good healthcare, while the poorer states will end up with less.

The first states to enact a universal healthcare plan have the most to gain economicially. Since they will be in a position to attract companies and economic growth with lower healthcare costs.

Um....isn't that what the uninsured already do?

And die...

I did like one of Michael Moore's stunts for that old TV Nation series. He profiled a guy whose liver transplant had been denied by insurance, which obviously left him in a very dodgy position of not having very long to live. They had the man's family stage a mock funeral outside the company offices with the guy lying in an open coffin.

To pay for the tax credit, McCain would eliminate the tax exemption for people whose employers pay a portion of their coverage, raising an estimated $3.6 trillion in revenues, Holtz-Eakin said. Companies that provide coverage to workers still would get tax breaks. McCain would also cut costs by limiting health care lawsuits.

Moore's corporate crime stuff on that show was quite funny.

He had a regular feature which involved a guy in a rubber chicken suit confronting executives in office buildings, which nearly always resulted in his being thrown out on the street.

McCain has said he'd be cool with importing drugs from Canada. Of course, if that happened, the Canadians (if they're smart - and they are) would jack up prices for drugs sold to Americans.

The famous prescription drugs are cheaper in Canada myth. While prescription drugs are cheaper in Canada it's because the government mandates the cost of prescription drugs. This affects Canadians when they try to use very new or experimental drugs because they are not on the list and therefore cost far more. The Canadian government is doing this in order to protect the cost of Canadian health insurance, yes it really costs money even though it is payed for with tax dollars.

I'm pretty sure that the loophole being exploited by private citizens, buying their drugs from Canada, would not exist at the government level. Also I'm not sure that that the loophole actually exists, I think that it's just a lack of monitoring rather than actual hole in the legislation.

I have specific experience with a chemo drug that is manufactured in Italy and they sell it for $350 per pose but by the same in the in the US is $6,000.00. I drug distributor in Mexico tried to sell it for the same to a charity cancer center so they went direct to the manufacturer in Italy and got it for the $350 plus shipping.

Obviously we need health care reform but why are these three the ones to decide what is best? Get a group of experts on how to build the best healthcare system in the world and then bring it to congress and the senate. We don't need a bandaid, we need the entire sytem rebuilt from scratch.

One brilliant idea, thank you
